Scare while out picking up brass

So this weekend I had my one year old while the wife was at work. I decided to load him up and go look for spent cases. I loaded him up and headed to the desert. we made a stop by a pretty popular spot where there is a long straight road running east to west and everyone shoots off the road towards the south into the hills which I thought was unspoken law and common sencse. I seen a few vehicles about a half mile up the road so I pulled off at good spot and put my son in his Carrier and start picking up brass about a minute later I hear a very distinct wizzzzz!!! My heart jumped out of my chest so I jumped in the truck and high tailed it before even putting him in his car seat. I drove up to the north a bit and to check these guys out with my binoculars and they had bowling pins set up parallel with the road shooting back towards the main road where everyone drives in from. So long story short I took the long way around to go home and thanked my lucky stars. Just thought I would share this story with you so you don't get to comfortable in your go to spots for your Sunday shooting fun.

Man, I am glad that your son and you are OK. The thought of your son there makes it all the more nerve-wrecking. You should post the location so that we can all avoid ending up in your situation.

When I was 6 or 7 I went fishing with my dad and brothers and had a similar experience. Out of nowhere bullets started wizzing by. My dad yelled a few choice words in the direction of the shooters. Firing stopped and I continued fishing.

So, you didn't see fit to say "Hey, I'm down the road a bit picking up trash, would you mind shooting away from the road instead of along the road?"

                  +1^

Maybe the shooters wasn't aware of what's behind their target (which is one of the important gun rules). Would of been nice to let them know so the next person/persons wouldn't end up getting hurt. But very glad to hear that you and your son made it out with no harm. I also agree about being too laxative when shooting out in blm or open land, don't always assume people know the unwritten rule.

Glad you're okay, but why didn't you mention this to the idiots? It's important that they know they could have killed you.

Next time if you don't feel safe talking to the idiots (and yes, they're idiots) then call the cops. The last thing responsible gun owners need is someone getting shot because some members of society can't handle responsibility.

                        ^^^ This.

This is no joking matter or something to just shrug a shoulder at. Needs to be dealt with once and for good.

I would not drive toward idiots like that having a one year old with me. You never know who you may end up coming face to face with.

Call the rangers or cops or whoever rides that area and let them deal with the Ahats.

You and your son dodged a bullet! Glad neither of you were injured.

You probably should have tried to let them know they were being stupid a-holes...but not I those words of course. But I do kinda understand why you might not want to approach a bunch of douchebags with your infant son in tow. That would be a definitely be a difficult call.
                          Sorry, not sorry.

Your not going to tell her, but you post it on the internet with details?

Even if the chance of her seeing this is very remote, you need to learn to be a bit more vague, and or make the story about a friend of a friend's cousin.

I would have informed them about the universal rules. They may have been new shooters without a brain, but once told, they might start to use their gray matter. That's only if they seemed to be the approachable and teachable type. If they were aggressive in return, it would prompt a call to the Sheriff on my way out.

But I question taking your 1 year old out to collect brass. At that age, any exposure to lead can be treacherous to their development. Especially with their penchant to put things in their mouth at that age. You might consider looking for desert treasures instead of spent brass with your son.

I'm glad you both made it out safe.
