Whatever you do, remember that the head, even if cut off, can still "bite" and inject you with venom for quite some time. Just because the snake is in more than one piece or blown to pieces doesnt' mean it's no longer dangerous.

I can only speak to my own experience working out here in the oil fields where the biggest rattlesnakes we encounter are the 3ish foot Mojave Rattlesnakes.
Personally I'd be more comfortable taking a flathead shovel to them, chopping off the head (it can still bite), and burying it than firing a shot off with the chance of a ricochet or sending it down your property without 100% knowledge of a backstop or who is on your property and where. Again, I don't live where you live and I can only speak from my.own experience.
Teaching the kids about where to not go and what to look for, as well as a good set of boots and maybe snake boots or chaps would go a long way.Comment

Or you can get some outdoor cats. They are not venomous.I have wondered that myself.
OP, snakes in general, including rattlesnakes, are more beneficial than they are likely to pose a real threat to your family. Educate your loved ones on the does/don'ts of living in snake country and forget about trying to eradicate every rattlesnake you see (unless you are more comfortable with having flea infested and potentially hanta virus infected rodents running around on your property).Welcome to OT, where hypocrisy is King, outrage is Queen and the Kingdom is on the shores of the Denial River.

Take one 5.56 millimeter blank cartridge and chamber it. Take one (1) USGI cleaning rod section and insert into barrel from muzzle. Fire at snake when coiled to maximize points of penetration.Comment

This one had nine rattles. It only took one shot of Win .22lr snake shot, although the spent casing didn't eject (Marlin Model 60). That's a five iron for scale. This was a problem snake that hung around the house and was agressive.

Lost a dog to a rattle snake bite and a beautiful (and expensive) mare to a Mojave Green bite. Many on our front porch and rear patios too. Sorry, all buzz tails within our fence line get eliminated. A single shot H&R Survivor .410 with birdshot is my weapon of choice. Gopher snakes, they are welcome here and they frequent the hay barn regularly!!The satisfaction of a job well done is to be the one who has done it
