My car has one of those - it also locks with the auto key, just like the trunk or the doors. So even if you have one of those, if it locks and is locked, then your trunk is still a compartment separate from the cabin, or a locked and secure container if you want to call it that instead - like a giant briefcase.

Remember when transporting a pistol you must follow the same rules as transporting a standard handgun/pistol. It must be in a locked container or have a open bolt lock through the magwell.

If it's in the locked trunk, it is legal. I carry my non-CCW pistols in unlocked cases to the range - in my trunk.

And if you want to nitpick, anyone transporting a rifle in an unlocked case in their passenger compartment/cabin, is very likely to be breaking the law too at some point in the trip - the Federal GFSZ act. It is very hard to get around these days without coming within 1000 feet of the boundary of a public, private, or parochial school.

      Worth the read.

      My opinion:

Be a gray man when transporting firearms. No gun stickers on my car. I am another brick in the wall.

Follow the law and always transport locked case and unloaded. Including long guns.

Transport in the Trunk in locked cases without Gun Labels or gun advertising. I use a business briefcase from Staples that appears to be a normal briefcase any business man would carry.

Personally, for me, I would never admit to transporting guns. I know this is controversial but that's my personal call.

Want to look in my trunk officer? Get a search warrant. Again, this is my decision. Since I always transport legally, nothing bad can happen.

My big fear about trunk searches is my Get Home Bag and related survival equipment. I don't want a group of police officers dumping out my gear on the side of the Freeway searching thru my med kit, wondering if those pills are legal? Stuff like that bothers me. I worked hard on my Kit and spent a lot of money for gear and supplies. Finding an unloaded Kel Tec folding .223 rifle, ammo, a Glock 20 and Ammo, various knives, an Axe..etc, food, water, gobs of gear, Etc, will push some of these officers to arrest and confiscation mode.

I don't need this sort of drama.

      Lock everything up. My advice.

you want to be 100% safe and immune to anyone wanting to turn a legal schmuck on you.
Locked, locked and locked. Then put them in the trunk or the back of the SUV or behind the seat in case you drive a pick up.
How hard is that? How many gun cases do you have? go to .99 Cent store and buy a bunch. Dangle one on every case and lock them before transport.

One situation that I did not see discussed is when you take a gun in an unlocked case out of a trunk and where/what ground you are standing on or going to be walking on.

If you are parked in front of or across the street from destination (gun range, gun shop, house, etc) and take an unlocked gun case out of your locked trunk (on the street) and walk to destination, you are still breaking the law. The locked trunk does not help you there.

So, Make a habit of locking all gun cases.
