Transporting AR pistol same as standard pistol

This is the 3rd time I have seen and individual who transports his AR pistol in a rifle case, no lock or device. Remember when transporting a pistol you must follow the same rules as transporting a standard handgun/pistol. It must be in a locked container or have a open bolt lock through the magwell.

I have also seen uppers and lowers not married in casses leaving LEO's to determine if this lower with a stock belongs to this neat 7.5 upper that is laying next to it.

Just as an obvious revisit. Stay legal. Stay safe.

So, in an effort to dispel confusion for new gun owners (and old one too), how about discussing safe and legal transport. I own both a car and an SUV which I both use to visit ranges. As I understand it, your car's locked trunk is considered a locked container and so placing an unloaded gun/pistol in a bag/case into your trunk is considered safe and legal. When I use my SUV to visit an outdoor range, since there is no isolated locked area of an SUV, I place my unloaded weapons into a case and I lock that and place everything out of reach. Again, safe and legal.

    Did I miss anything?

Good advice but Wrong about the open bolt lock thru the magwell. That's a child lock for storage at home and not in the PC concerning legal transport

These small combo locks from Wally World don't cost much. Just lock up all your unloaded guns when transporting. All of them.

Out of reach? Not required. You can have your locked briefcase with your unload handgun inside on your front seat or lap if you desire. Ammo can be n the same case, just not loaded in the gun.

I was under the belief that all AR sporting rifles had to be transported like handguns?
I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

A long gun is a long gun. Same rules for all of them.

You may be thinking about RAWs, Registered Assault Weapons which by law have to be transported in a locked case and has destination requirements.

            No trunk guns with RAWs.

A normal lever gun, bolt gun or AR type California legal rifle can be transported in the bare in your trunk or in a zippered gun case unlocked if desired, must be unloaded of course and with the FED law about school zones it's best to have all guns unloaded and locked up. Locked are inexpensive. Keeps you out of trouble.

No *if* your car has those pass-through compartment that can be accessed from the cabin.

In an effort to keep it simple and to prevent a individual from riding the line of what they "think" is ok during transport, how bout anything under 16 unless your LE keep it locked in a pistol case or locked container.

Consider LE pulling you over on the way to or from the range, he opens the trunk after some back and fourth and notices a very tacticool AR pistol on an 80% he already has his LE vibes out and you then begin to argue transport laws and or pistol vs long gun policies. This is a conversation I rather have over a beer with a LEO rather than in the back of his squad while I am waiting for a super to get involved. Again just my opinion but better 10% above the standard than 10% riding the line

I only say this because it all comes down to interpretation and what the DA decides to add or imply once an arrest takes place. Prime example is "suspicious or nefarious activity"

Sometimes as a joke I will offer up someone to be a test case by just letting them follow their own mistakes, however in this situation I wouldn't even want this to be an issue that may then snowball into anti pistol efforts. Imho

Thank you for clarification, I wonder why turners sold you these when leaving with a rifle? Just for the "lock" aspect? Or because you are required to have one at time of purchase plain and simple. Plus it got turners an extra $20 each time lol

Yeah, my car doesn't have one of those. So, in my situation, my statement above still holds.

FYI there is a massive thread concerning this subject. A sticky...

                        Worth the read.

                        My opinion:

Be a gray man when transporting firearms. No gun stickers on my car. I am another brick in the wall.

Follow the law and always transport locked case and unloaded. Including long guns.

Transport in the Trunk in locked cases without Gun Labels or gun advertising. I use a business briefcase from Staples that appears to be a normal briefcase any business man would carry.

Personally, for me, I would never admit to transporting guns. I know this is controversial but that's my personal call.

Want to look in my trunk officer? Get a search warrant. Again, this is my decision. Since I always transport legally, nothing bad can happen.

My big fear about trunk searches is my Get Home Bag and related survival equipment. I don't want a group of police officers dumping out my gear on the side of the Freeway searching thru my med kit, wondering if those pills are legal? Stuff like that bothers me. I worked hard on my Kit and spent a lot of money for gear and supplies. Finding an unloaded Kel Tec folding .223 rifle, ammo, a Glock 20 and Ammo, various knives, an Axe..etc, food, water, gobs of gear, Etc, will push some of these officers to arrest and confiscation mode.

I don't need this sort of drama.

                        Lock everything up. My advice.

Is that in the law, or is it someone's interpretation of the law?

The AR pistol always gets a small padlock on the zipper of the Wilson tennis bag.
