    Using car wax on guns?

I have to kick myself a little for this. While I clean my shotguns regularly (wife and I shoot trap almost every week), I've not been wiping down the exterior as often as I should. With sweaty hands, I've noticed that the top part of my Benelli Supersport, which is removable, has developed a bit of rust.

After considering of what I have on hand at home, I grabbed my bottle of car polish/wax, Klasse All-In-One, and used it to polish the rust off. Thankfully, this seems to have worked and it left the part shiny and nice. *whew!*

I want to check with Calguns if I can rely on this polish/wax compound meant for car paint to protect the exterior of my shotguns against sweat from my hands? Previously I've wiped the exterior (when I remember to ) with silicon spray but one thing I don't like it that it leaves the gun a little too slippery/oily. This car polish/wax seems to be better, it leaves the metal surface very smooth but I'm not sure how good it'll be as a protective compound.

    Any recommendations? Thanks.

I use it on mine all the time. The wax I use is Renaissance, it was recommend on a Midway video. Especially if you're trying to protect the wood stock or bluing.

      On blued guns it's fantastic.

A lot of guys will put a coat of Johnson's Paste wax on their guns before going hunting in rainy areas.

I'm in the "lot of guys" club. Trick taught me by a former BIL who was a guide in Palmer Ak. He even uses Johnson's on his stainless firearms. Because up there, they do rust.

But I use 0000 steel wool and ATF for rust removal. Thankfully haven't had to do that since Johnson's came into my guns lives.

            ^^^ This!

Renaissance is fantastic stuff. It's museum grade quality. Tons of uses. I've got a hard chromed 1911 where the chrome has worn through in the magwell and the now bare metal is prone to rusting. Renaissance Wax has done an excellent job of keeping it rust free. I just make sure I hit the magwell as soon as I come back from the range.

Oh, and don't let the price scare you. It may seem a little expensive but it lasts forever. I'm still on my first can and it's at least four years old and there's still half of it left. A little goes a long way.

I only apply it on my piston driven collection.

Urethane clear coat sealant would work very well. Meguires makes the stuff I use.

It all sounds like a good idea but I wouldn't use it on a hunting gun. Wouldn't the deer, yotes, rabbits, squires, long horn sheep on and on smell the wax?

They will smell you before they smell the wax.

Thanks guys, I'll give the Renaissance Wax a try, the urethane clear coat sounds interesting too, I'll have to experiment it on some other metal surface first before trying it on my shotgun.

Very common for museums to use wax to protect metal objects, firearms included. Good stuff. Really helps to prevent the "speckling" that sometimes happens to blueing, too.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
                          Come on...what harm??

Renaissance Wax is gtg for wood, metal and gunleather. it most notably does not soften leather like many leather conditioners that ought not be used for gunleather.
