So they can get you!! It's for a manufacturers info standpoint for tracking lots and such.

But, in some states, they do have meaning since, some states have an AW ban modelled after the old Fed AW ban thus requiring anyone in that state to only have "preban" mags.

Yeah there are still people who will pay big money for pre Clinton AWB mags since that's all they can legally have.

Magazine rebuild kits were available in CA up until 2 (?) years ago. You could have 2013 mag body with old guts in it. No worries.

                        .
Those are Clinton AWB era >10 round mags. Not sure how many people in CA would have those legally before the year 2000.

                          No legal force after 2004

The 1994 AWB prohibited the manufacture and sale of NEW products to private individuals.
It did not prohibit transfers of existing items.
Once the ban expired in 2004, those magazines became fair game to private individuals.

Like the red "55" on the speedometer of vehicles made in 1980, those words no longer have any meaning.

Even in California, the transfer of preban magazines was legal until California enacted its own ban in 2000. On December 31, 1999, you could still legally take possession of a preban magazine... you just couldn't purchase a new one.

You could have a 2016 dated mag body. There's still no law against reparing legally owned mags and no law against buying a repair/replacement mag body.
