Seems to me to be a somewhat grey area,as the OLL's are legal, right now, and, as far as I know, its legal to purchase a .50 upper.....

Any responses welcome and I'm not thinking of doing this as I couldn't afford a .50 upper in any case, just wondering...

    As far as I know:

    1) Any 50BMG upper half is not allowed to put on any OLL. The reason is, all OLLs became available after the end of year 2004, which is the deadline to acquire receivers for 50BMG. (Of course the receivers acuqired prior to the end of 2004 must be registered as 50BMG prior to the end of Apr 30, 2006.)

    2) If you have any AW registered by 2000, it is legal to be used as 50BMG, no matter you register it as 50BMG by the end of Apr 30, 2006 or not.

    3) 50 BMG upper itself is perfectly legal in CA. Just don't put it on incorrect lower receivers.

      ALS uppers

This has been discussed before, but if you have a OLL you must first pin the mag so you don't have an open magwell + pistol grip and any .50 variant upper you put on the OLL, it must not be able to chamber the .50bmg cartridge. Bill, if I'm wrong, please correct me.

If you run the pistol grip + pinned mag, you might have to grind down the mag lips of the fixed mag so it will clear the bolt.

I heard that Darran of Advanced Long Range systems (www.50bmg.net) has a .50 variant as well where the shoulder angle of the .50bmg round is pushed down (the angle is more acute) ever so slightly. Thus, a .50bmg round can't be chambered in this upper.

Has anyone tried ALS' uppers? If so, how's the quality and build time?
