    ? re; .50 uppers

Haven't seen this posted and if I'm stepping on anyones toes, sorry, but with the ban on .50 sales in cali and now the OLL situation, has anyone thought to put a .50 upper on their OLL, and what is the legality of this?

Seems to me to be a somewhat grey area,as the OLL's are legal, right now, and, as far as I know, its legal to purchase a .50 upper.....

Any responses welcome and I'm not thinking of doing this as I couldn't afford a .50 upper in any case, just wondering...

If it shoots 50BMG then its a big no no.

However if it shoots other 50 stuff like 50 Beowlf, 50DTC, 50AE, then it is ok.

I hope some will offer 50DTC upper for your needs soon.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.

You can correct my spelling and grammar error anytime.
I welcome it. How else would I learn.

You cannot put a .50 BMG upper on a OLL, if you do you'll be making a .50 BMG AW. If you have a registered (AW) lower you can attach a .50 BMG upper to it as it's already considered an AW.

I think Dave (Ferret50) will make you a .50 DTC upper, the reamers are out, all he would have to do is ream the barrel for .50 DTC. There's also the Ultralite 50 and Ultramag 50, I think both will make you an upper in .50 DTC also.

As .50 shooter pointed out, it would seem to me that while a .50 BMG upper may not in and of itself be regulated or illegal in this state, as soon as you attach it to a receiver or otherwise make it capable of firing, you have done something totally illegal (felony?) because you have created a .50 BMG rifle.

Always remember that the receiver is the gun so if you have a registered .50 receiver, you are good to go.

If you do not at this time have a registered .50 BMG receiver in the state of CA, you will probably never be able to own one in this state, nor any rifle that can fire .50 BMG.

No, that is not true. If you have a registered AW from 2000 or earlier, you would have had to register it again as a .50BMG. If you did not it is still illegal to contruct a .50BMG now. They are two different kinds of AWs and are not interchangable.

50 shooter is correct. The one thing I am unsure about is if the upper by itself is legal in CA as a 50BMG. If the law includes "parts", then the 50BMG uppers are out unless you have a registered AR/AW lower.

Most all of the 50BMG manufacturers (Spider Firearms included) will chamber your rifle in 50DTC, which is ballistically the same as 50BMG. So you will not be loosing anything.

Be careful here guys, FCI released a statement (which is being discussed on the FCSA member forum) reguarding ATF and CADOJ poking around for infractions of the AW laws. If you have a question reguarding the legality of your weapons or about AW laws, contact your lawyer and NOT the ATF/DOJ. A lot of this stuff is in a very wide and very grey area, which leaves a lot of room for questions to be desided upon by a jury. Catch my drift?

Nope 50 Shooter is correct. We are talking two things here. First any registered "AW" can indeed fire the .50 bmg and not had to have be registered again as a .50 BMG Rifle. It actually would have been refused if you tried. On the other hand, a .50 BMG Rifle that is registered as a ".50 BMG Rifle" cannot be an AW.

AW and ".50BMG Rifle" are two separate catagories with AW the more evil one (in the eyes of the DOJ) and as such can also be a ".50 BMG Rifle" but it CANNOT be registered as such, as the catagory called ".50 BMG Rifle" cannot be an AW.

              From the Attorney General's FAQ:
If a .50 BMG rifle is already registered as an assault weapon, does it need to be registered under the provisions of the .50 Caliber BMG Regulation Act of 2004?
.50 BMG rifles already registered as assault weapons pursuant to the assault weapons laws in effect prior to January 1, 2005 DO NOT need to be registered again to satisfy the requirements of the .50 Caliber BMG Regulation Act of 2004.

Can assault weapon characteristics, such as a pistol grip, be placed on a registered semi-auto centerfire .50 BMG rifle that has a detachable magazine?

No. The law provides that a .50 BMG rifle cannot be an assault weapon nor a machine gun. Therefore, while a .50 BMG rifle already registered as an assault weapon meets the requirements for .50 BMG rifle registration, a .50 BMG rifle registration alone does not meet the assault weapon registration requirements.
This last question deals with not being able to now remove the non-detachable magazine on the Barrett 82A1Cal and run with a standard detachable one. Now if you removed the PG, then you can. Basically doing the same OLL thing.

I hope you're not referring to an AR-15 OLL to shoot .50bmg.

Well the 50 spotter is not banned so anyone can buy that upper. Only the 50 BMG round is banned. You can use either on your reg'ed lower but you can't use a 50BMG upper on a new OLL.

Well isn't there like a sub category under assault weapons for "Evil Black Gun" and "Evil Russian Gun"

Theres also the .416 coming out by barrett. They've been saying its going to be better than 50 bmg. I wonder if anyone ever took a barrett 50bmg rifle safari hunting.

How are you going to carry around ALL DAY & then ACCURATELY fire from the shoulder, while standing, a 25lb+ rifle??

Not only that, but .50 BMG is overkill for pretty much anything except an elephant....even then there's the lugging it in the field all day & firing it from the shoulder issue.

The point of a safari is to come away with a nice hide & head to display, and they typically want to give the meat away to the locals, or I suppose you could take it home yourself.

.50 BMG would pretty well obliterate most animals, and defeats the purpose of going on safari.

Regarding the .416, it is supposed to be flatter-shooting than the BMG and more accurate.

                            But .50 is still bigger.

                              any .50bmg brass headstamped "50bmg?"

The thing with using the 510DTC round is that the same brass that the .50bmg uses must currently be fireformed in order to chamber. However, what happens if the range Nazis or some LEO inspects the rounds and it has a headstamp of "50bmg." Technically, the round should NOT chamber into a .50bmg rifle.

                              What then?

Which .50bmg brass is headstamped with "50bmg?" Most of the ones I have seen say "LC 50" which is made in Lake City, MO.

I wonder if Ackley will come out with a .50 Ackley Improved round? The shoulder is set at a different angle so a standard .50bmg cartridge will not chamber into a .50 AI rifle.

So for you wildcatters out there, change the length of the brass, set the shoulder angle or length differently and you got yourself a different cartridge than a .50bmg.
