    Episode at Turners

I went to turner's in orange the other day ... looking for a cheap scope that i can mount scout style on my M1 carbine . I did some browsing while i waited for some help. The counter guy that helped me was friendly , however as he put it , scopes are not his specialty. So he asked an older gentleman at the register what he would suggest ." It's already got iron sights , why would you want to scope an M1 carbine for ? Those aren't accurate rifles , if anything get a red dot " His buddy next to him said , just shoot it . I shrugged it off like whatever, thanked the counter guy and left. The only reason i want a scope , is because iron sights are a drag . At 100 yards my front post covers 1/2 of the target . I could file the sides of the post and probably will if i ever get really bored. Honestly i just think it would look cool. My point is this , if i want to buy land on the moon , sell it to me! And if you don't have it , order it. What's so hard about that ? Goodnight!

Look around at all the sponsors who sell gun and gun accesories.

They'd all be happy to sell to you, I'm sure, rather than shrugging their shoulders at you.

Actually, that's the same response I would have told someone if they asked me about scope for an M1 Carbine. That advice is basically saving someone from wasting the time and money to put a telescopic sight on a firearm with mediocre accuracy at the short ranges.

As far as finding someone to recommend a scope, why not keep it concise and tell the salesman you need a scope for a scout mount with X" of eye relief (relative to your cheekweld)? At least you'd eliminate any bias. Granted, then the salesman would simply recommend a Leupold 2.5 or 4x scout scope or a pistol scope with anywhere from 16-20" eye relief.

And for the record, iron sights are not a drag. Post too thick? Use a 6 o'clock hold and learn to focus on a single point on the tip of the front sight post, not the whole sight post.

Turners has quality optics? The Turners in Redondo is piss poor for glass. Those guys are so close minded, I wouldn't ask them anything technical. I heard their OLL spiel, as they were pushing a Carbon 15 sale.

Heh. At my Turners we stock Kalles, Swaraski, Trijicon and a US optic. No high quality optics there.

At RB Turners I asked about an ACOG and they looked at me like I was speaking Deutsch. I guess they are too close to the ghetto and dont have the clientele for US Optic, Swarovski and Trijicon.

Hence why they got jacked a few months ago.

So Bosco, what did the manager of the store have to say when you told him about the counter help's utter lack of salesmanship?
For that matter, have you got a reply from billortiz@turners.com yet?

I ran a scope on my Universal M1 Carbine, and it definitely tightened up the groups for me, but my eyes are not so great for iron sights any more. I shot most of my life with iron sights, and now am going more for scopes and red dots.

Personally, I'd put a good red dot on an M1 Carbine, as it keeps things light, fast handling, and still helps accuracy, but if I wanted to put magnified glass, I'd put a decent scout or pistol scope.

Here's my CMP M1 Carbine with an Ultimak scout mount and an Ultradot red dot. I've got a Burris 1.5-4x pistol scope that I've shot on a Mini 14 with good results, but haven't put it on the M1 Carbine yet.

Iron sights are a drag? lol Learn to use them! A rifle scope really is just going to be a waste of money on the Carbine. If you want to put something on it to look cool (arguable that anything looks cooler than a stock Carbine), go with a red dot.

Alternatively, if your only real complaint is that the front sight post is too thick, any competent gunsmith will be able to thin the post.

You should go back and read what the acceptance requirements for accuracy were for the M1 Carbine. An M1 Garand it is not. If you are shooting 4" groups at 100 yards then you have a very accurate Carbine.
For this accuracy, the stock iron sights are more than adequate.

If you want to improve your Carbine accuracy, read this:

I think they were trying to do you a favor. It's actually refreshing that they would rather give you honest advice instead of just taking your money! That's one of the things that I like about turners.

If you get one of those

big shock mounted Unertl scopes then the your groups should = field of view.

Turners in Orange does not have sales people, they have hobbyists.
