    Kern County CCW Denied!

Well as seen in my post last week, i went down on tuesday to the sheriffs office to apply for my CCW. Now, I am in Kern county, not in the city but in the county.

Well, I am going to turn 22 in less than 2 weeks and I already have a Utah CCW. Clean record also.

    my reason was:
I live in Kernville and have to travel constantly for school to Los Angeles and often late at night. Due to the remoteness and lack of cell phone reception in the Kern River Canyon, I feel particularly at risk while traveling through this area and would like to be able to lawfully carry a concealed weapon for my own safety. I am also an avid outdoorsman and camper who spends lots of time alone in the wooded areas of the Sequoia National Forest, far from law enforcement, and feel that lawfully carrying a concealed weapon would keep myself safe from possible encounters with wild animals or criminals. For all of these reasons, I respectfully request that I be granted a concealed weapons permit.

Turn it in tuesday and I'm told ill have my answer within 2 weeks. Well, 2 days later I get a letter that says "the permit has been denied since their is not enough good cause to get the permit"

Signed for the sherrif by a detective in the licensing division.....

I spoke with the range master who teaches the class in kern county and he was suprised but did say he has heard of some recent denials. What is my next step?? Should i contact that officer and ask for a reason of why it is not a good cause? Should i contact Mack Wimbish (head of kern county) for an appt as he might be able to grant it since he has the final say?

What say you? i say is i'm disappointed as of right now....

Everything I've read here about getting a CCW license has said not to list "self protection" as a reason. It's always been recomended to list protection of property, mostly guns or valuables, as a reason.

sorry to hear about the denial.

I would have thought that was a good enough reason to have a CCW....

I would say that being 22 did not help any....

I would think to best thing to do would be to talk directly to the people that signed the paperwork and see why they would not give you the CCW...

in any case....atleast you tried....i wouldn't even try in my county...there's too many liberials running the PDs

Start a buisness and call it ATM refill. Then tell them you fill ATM's at small grocery stores and bars. You sometimes carry large amounts of small bills with you to and from ATM's.

An addition that may be helpful:

I am also an avid outdoorsman and camper who spends lots of time alone in the wooded areas of the Sequoia National Forest target shooting and hunting with many expensive firearms and large quantities of ammunition, far from law enforcement, and feel that lawfully carrying a concealed weapon would keep myself and my property safe from possible encounters with wild animals or criminals.

Do you do any photography? Carry expensive cameras?

My buddy was originally denied a CCW in Sacramento Co. but he appealed it. He sat down with the individual responsible in signing out the CCWs and apparently he made a good impression. He was 25 at the time and worked at a local range/store. He claimed he often closed up alone and transported cash. He also had letters of rec from the owners of the business. I still can't believe that guy got one in Sacramento Co.

            Appeal it if you can.

              very politely appeal it.

and be ready to explain why you have a UT CCW. that always seemed like it would be counterproductive to me.

Let me see if I read you correctly, spending lots of time outdoors with lots of firearms with large amounts of ammo, and because of THAT you need a CCW for protection?

Typically it is the LACK of having a firearm being the reason why one wants a CCW.

Plus if you are indeed out hunting, you can already have a concealed handgun on you, without a CCW.

                      Age + school + hunting = denied...

10% is right on the money... start a small ebay business and run it for a couple months, take paper work with you and show deposits to banks, etc.

I run a business drawing house plans, and I have to go into strange peoples houses and rural locations in far parts of Berdoo County all the time where I might not have cell service and won't be able to alert authorities for help should an incident occur, additionally I carry large sums of $$$ in check and cash form. My father is a jewel collector and I routinely transport jewels for him as well.

These will be my good cause reasons when I apply next year....

I think CA put a stop to applications in counties other than where you live. This is no longer a viable strategy.

Very true....They won't grant you a CCW because you want it for "self defense". I've heard of women who were raped or beaten by ex's or boyfriends get denied.

On my CCW app, I put that I often times took work home with me and those often consisted of Negiotable securities in excess of millions of dollars.

My ex-boss back many years ago (1980 or so) got a CCW in Sac county. He owned a 7-11 and carried a snub in brown paper bag that also contained the cash deposits for the day. He would walk out of the store with his right hand holding the snub inside the bag. If approached by a would-be robber, his plan was to hand over the bag while squeezing the trigger. I remember him saying Sac County was not CCW friendly but he had buds at SSD who helped get his app approved.
