Oh, and by the way.... Nuh uhh.

    HANDGUNS

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 16850, the term "locked container" means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment.

You find the part in the above that says it needs to be a hard case and I'll buy you 100 rounds of the caliber of your choice.

If you can't find it, you may not want to give legal advice unless you know what you're talking about.

FYI OP, I have one of the G.P.S. backpacks like the above and am very impressed with the quality of their product, they make smaller bags if you want something for just a pistol or two.

If you want something a little more discreet, a lot of laptop bag/briefcase type nylon bags have lockable zipper pulls.

As someone re-entering the shooting world, can you guys clarify for me a bit? (I realize this is getting into the "How CA Laws Affect Me" territory.)

Rifles can be transported from locked trunk to the range in an unlocked container, but handguns need a locked container to go from my trunk across the parking lot into the range, correct?

They don't have to be cased to/from your vehicle on range property or anywhere else that it's legal to discharge a firearm. The exception to this is a range parking lot that is shared with other businesses. However most ranges want your firearms cased to/from the firing line.

It's prudent to lock the zipper pulls as close to the zipper as possible. Some long pulls locked together at the far ends can be separated enough that a couple of fingers a can be inserted inside the bag. Who knows for sure, but if you could stick a finger in the bag ans access the trigger it may not be considered a secure container.

The good thing about a locked soft case is you can carry a knife and cut it open faster than you can unlock it to get to your stuff if you need it.

I have the explorer 3 long gun bag. It's built pretty solid.

I use a Samsonite iPad case. Works perfectly and doesn't look like I'm carrying a gun.
