    What do you think?

I thought this was a well written approach to a complicated problem that we are facing. Yes I am aware of slippery slopes and such but this person really took the time and thought to address both sides of the fence and attempt to come up with solutions that address root problems based in statistical fact instead of fear based motivation.

I'm not taking the time to read that.

Besides -- I wasn't in more than a dozen words or so and he was already wrong.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Actually, not a bad read. I don't agree with everything he says (universal background checks for ALL transactions isn't necessary, inter family should be exempt for example) but showing my ID to buy ammo isn't a big deal (as long as thats it, no taking my DL number or filling out forms. Check that I'm an adult over 21 like booze and I'm ok with it). CCW permits, gun training back in schools, sin tax on violent media (movies, video games etc). I could get behind some of it.

Not keen on forced compliance by health care professionals. There's already a shortage of Drs, don't need to make it worse by making them cease practice on ethical grounds or make them criminals for no reporting. Not liking nationalizing gun laws so they are applied equally nationwide - sounds good here in Cali but the other 43 free states might disagree.

Frankly, he was much harder on the Anti than the Pro 2A crowd.

Change all the drivel from gun rights to voting rights. I'll gladly conceed to that crap if they do the same for voting. I know they never will, so I never will either.

I will accept his proposals as long as they are applied to all other rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Apply it to speech, voting, freedom of religion, freedom of association, and all the others.

The majority would not accept those restrictions.

Yes, force doctors to report all patients that they think might be a threat to society or who have a mental illness. The problem is psychiatrists are not good at predicting who will become violent and who will not. Are we really going to take away the rights and freedoms of a group of people because some might be dangerous in the future? If we are doing that then we might as well permanently lock away all teens that get into any trouble with the law. As a group they are more likely to become adult criminals. Lets forget that our legal system is designed to function on what a person has done and not on what a person might do.

Again, what constitutes a mental illness? The experts cannot agree. Give them time and they will be able to label all of us with a mental illness. Does anyone really want the government to have their private medical records? I do not. That information can be used against you in the future.

Yes, a sin tax on movies, games, or other media that depicts gun violence will help solve things. Repeated studies have shown beyond doubt that these things do not cause people to go out and commit violent acts. Violent people are drawn to entertainment that depicts violence. Non-violent people can also watch entertainment depicting violence without becoming violent.

I grew up watching and reading about WW II and westerns. The books I read were much more graphic. I was fascinated by the history of the battles and read every book I could get. I also read many fictional novels. I was also an avid reader of novels from the old west and they were extremely violent. I had several friends that read similar books and we did not grow up to be violent. In fact, by many accounts, this country is less violent today than it was when I was growing up.

Finally, many of the proposed laws will only be followed by the law abiding and so will only be a burden on them. The criminals will not be affected.

People believe a background check is a perfect predictor of future behavior. Background checks cannot find what has not yet been discovered nor can they accurately predict future behavior. We all have our breaking points. Push someone hard enough under the right circumstances, and the person will break and commit horrible acts of violence.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?
