I didn't get hired numerous times over with several departments before I received job offers from two AMAZING agencies within weeks of each other. It was a tough choice, but I chose and ended up getting in with one of California's finest.

The other was Federal. DEA Special Agent. I didn't take that, actually, because I didn't want to drag the wife all over the country with me every time I moved...Two weeks (ha!) after I turned it down, we decided to split up anyway, but that's beside the point.

If you're interested in the job, keep applying and keep your head together. Don't screw up, don't lie, don't cheat. Be an honest citizen and take care of yourself and if you work at it, you'll find one that you like.

I start my academy in one month and one day.

I just met my background investigator for the sheriffs dept. to go over my packet.

He saw that I had a non resident CCW permit and more than 7 registered guns (I sold most of them, so why are they still registered as mine?) and talked to me like I was a crazy psycho. He asked me if I was a gun nut and said normal people don't have that many guns... He also implied I was weird for getting a CCW permit.

Needless to say I was getting a little bit agitated but kept my cool. He told me to write a page on each explaining why I have a CCW and why I have a lot of guns. I gave a very calguns answer!

But isnt it weird that law enforcement looks at people with guns unfit to be officers??

Was never mentioned during my background investigation. Although I never applied for a CCW.

Not every person with a collection of firearms is crazy...but there are crazy (paranoid) people who have collections of firearms. They are just making sure you don't fall into the paranoid category. An old partner of mine told me he was questioned reguarding his CCW. He was still hired so obviously it's not a disqualification. They just want to know everything about you.

Yes well....for some reason it seems when a guy kills himself at his own home....with a firearm....there are numerous others present. You are aware that law enforcement officers are at an increased risk of suicide correct?

The firearm question are like the numerous others asked...each one in and of itself (outside of crimminal behavior) is used in connecting with the others to establish a persons mental and moral stability. That being said there are certain Officers I will not work in the field with ever. I have had moments when I have looked over at an assigned partner and wonder who did their background investigation; I then do my best to lay low that day.

I am not kidding, many apply just for the perceived power trip and a CCW.

Just like interviewing anywhere, you need to screen your candidates and make sure you only get the best. That's probably what they were doing with you to test you.

I guess the benefit of having "a lot" of guns gives you more experience with weapons than employees w/ little-no guns. Your experience should be a benifit to the dept.

Not true. Most departments see it as a liability. They want to indoctrinate you so that your gun is your absolute last option when on duty.

Most gun owners wouldn't regard using their gun as their absolute last option. Therefore someone with a lot of guns/ shooting experience might be seen as more likely to break leather sooner rather than later.
