at least you weren't interviewed by a pregnant LEO who was on the rag
Is that even possible? As I recall from 7th grade sex ed, pregnancy is supposed to stop ovulation and menstruation.

As a father of 2, I can confirm this biology fact. However, the hormones coursing thru a pregnant woman makes PMS look like butterfly kisses. And post partum. OMG. Run.

During my interview, my answer to "I see you have a CCW. Why did you apply for one?" was basically "I choose to carry a weapon for the same reasons your officers do. I want to be able to defend myself and my family if I need to. It's a right given to me by this country and this state and I chose to excercise that right." Kind of a canned answer, but entirely truthful at the same time.

For the Alaska State Trooper gig (which I stupidly turned down, a whole 'nuther story) the BG investigator actually asked me to bring my Kahr K40 with me so he could check it out because he'd heard of them and was interested, but hadn't actually ever seen, held or fired one yet!

When asked how many weapons I had, I replied, kind of with a laugh, "You know, I don't really know. I've never really counted. I have shotguns for hunting birds and skeet, rifles for hunting game, blackpowder because its fun and a lot of stuff that is just fun to put holes in paper with."

When asked if I have any "assualt weapons", I answered no.

When asked what qualifications I have that would put me over other applicants, I used my vast weapons knowledge to show that I would be able to identifiy legal vs. illegal weapons, whether or not a shotgun has a plug in it when someone is hunting, whether a rifle is configured properly, etc etc etc.

        I got the job.

My brother had the exact same experience when he applied for the LASD. They harassed him about his CCW and collection as well. I wonder what LEO who are also Calgunners on this forum say about such horrible ethics in interviewing. It is no wonder most cops are morons. The only people it seems they want to hire are squares who have no experience with guns, drugs, gangs and other such street knowledge that would allow them to be much more productive on the field than just there high school diploma, AA degree and the police academy. Seriously, I would think people who have slightly tainted pasts and/or who have first hand experience with the same element they are getting trained and paid to go after would make the best cops. Unfortunatly, they dont see it that way. It really is no wonder most, not all, but most cops are ignorant, power tripping, dont know how to deal with their anger because they come from backrounds where they never had to deal with anger which is what makes them "sane" and "qualified" to be cops in the first place, unproductive morons!

Sorry, venting because my brother actually did not get hired and I think much of it had to do with his large gun collection and CCW.

Your brother should have told them that he volunteers for the Brady Center. And when asked about his "collection" & CCW, just answer only LEOs & applicants should have guns, or something elitist like that. I bet, he'll be hired on the spot......

Get in, do well, play the game as necessary, and when you get high up in the chain enough have all of the people with the mentality of that interviewer and the statements fired. "Normal people don't have that many guns" ???? Got news for the interviewer: LA isn't normal America. Being a leftist slimeball isn't normal either.

Send him this as a letter/essay about why you have a CCW.

Sorry, I didn't understand due to the way this statement is worded. You gave him a "Calguns" answer to his questions in the essay he asked you to write... OR you gave him a "Calguns" answer to what he could do with his suggestion you "explain yourself" in an essay?

I don't believe I'll ever accept a job that questions me about my "off the clock" activities, except in the sense of "do you have any obligations or commitments that would hinder you in the performance of this job, if you are hired?" kind of way.

In a similar interview I would have probably made a cheerful remark "Just what is a "gun nut" anyway? I hear that term used a bit, but never knew just what was meant by it..." and keep deflecting until he starts to get insistent at which point I would reply "I think we've covered this topic in sufficient detail... let's either move on to the next topic or decide how we want to conclude this meeting". I wouldn't get the job, you say? That's fine by me... I would have to need a job really REALLY badly in order to put up with that kind of BS.

Funny, I wrote along the lines of that. The police cannot be everywhere. The calguns answer was simply: it's my God given right to defend myself and nobody can tell me otherwise. I applied for this job to fight crime and to protect those around me. The CCW allows me to do just that.

At that point I wasnt concerned about getting the job or what he thought just wanted to get my point across.

I'd throw in the fact that the RKBA is a constitutionally guaranteed right and that keeping (collection) and bearing (CCW) arms makes you nothing but a law abiding citizen of the US of A.

If you want to throw in some jurisprudence about how the Police are not required to protect you (citation needed) and how the FBI has shown that 99% of the guns involved in crimes are either stolen are bought on the street means that as a lawful gun owner you are infinitely more likely to save someone's life than to commit a crime with your firearms.
