9MM for me for solely two reasons. Cost&capacity.
15+1 in my Glock 19 Gen4 riding on my 4 0'clock I am very comfortable with.
I can send more lead down range for less money.
It also allows me to standardize my ammo, I used to own a Shield in 9MM so having only to buy one caliber was really nice.
Being a "poor" college student I had and loved a Ruger SR1911 but found that the ammo costs were just too much so I sold it.
I will eventually own another 1911 but that to me is the only reason to own a .45 is a nice shooting 1911."Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." James Madison

I can assure you all that I wouldn't want to be shot by any of them.
With that, a well placed shot with almost any projectile should stop a threat.
Whatever caliber and brand of ammunition you choose is your business. No need to ask for permission or validation of your choice. Just practice often so you are proficient with your self defense weapon and can learn to trust your ammunition.Signature requiredComment

How many shootouts has the fbi been in the last 25 years? 2? Maybe 4? How many were ended with a single round of pistol fire from one of the 3 'staple' rounds in which all 3 rounds impacted the same area on people all mentally and physically identical? Do they have volunteers all weighting, aged, and in equal health in which they shoot each individual once in the same spot with each caliber then take notes on their reactions to be able to say round X isn't as effective as round Y so we need round Z
The same goes for the military and their need for a harder hitting round when 99% of their engagement take place at 100+ yards or involve hours of suppressive fire till air support comes. All this pistol caliber crap seems to be justification for someone to keep their job or someone at gun company X is buddies with whom ever makes these low priority calls to change caliber. Either way like others have said pick what one is comfortable with.Comment

With an occasional fart or two; cause you know, they like to eat.
I prefer .45 because it allows me to get a better pattern with my PC on it and they just look prettier in the end.

Few, but the problem is the notorious shootout in Miami where eight FBI agents stopped two perps and ended up with multiple agents wounded and two dead. The "weak" 9mm was blamed despite the fact only three of the eight agents carried a 9mm. A scape goat had to be created and that was it.
In the case of the military hatred of the 9mm cartridge, it stems from the fact that the long standing Colt .45 was dumped in favor of an Italian pistol...... and then there was the incident when the Seals allegedly fed the new M9's some super hot 9mm machine gun ammo so they would fail and one of the slides flew backward and took out some teeth (hence the chant, you aren't really a SEAL until you've tasted Italian steel). Regardless of what the M9 did or does, it will be badmouthed until eternity and the 9mm cartridge (which is NATO issue) will as well. The same goes for the military and their need for a harder hitting round when 99% of their engagement take place at 100+ yards or involve hours of suppressive fire till air support comes. 30 years ago. Uzi rounds. Bad Italian steel quality slides/fixed in Akkokeek. Rehash. There fixed it for ya with the bold text...
Personally, I have moved to mostly 9mm because:- it is plenty lethal,
- more accurate for me especially follow-up shots (for me who is the only person that counts for me),
- I can carry more rounds, and
- practice more inexpensively.
I have a single-stack .357 SIG as one of my carry guns and a .40 I just like to shoot.
That's me and only me. You have the freedom to choose, just be sure you do choose and you get that CHL/CCW.
The important thing is to be armed with an arm you are familiar with, practiced with, confident with, safe with, and accurate and fast with (accuracy being a clear first of all of them).
Armed people have a chance to defend themselves, unarmed people are sheep to the slaughter.
