    Shooting discontinued firearms

    Recently came across a couple of firearms I have been wanting for a while. Both are clean and have limited round count. Neither are in production any longer.

    Shoot them or put them away?

    I'd shoot them. Be a waste not to.

      It depends on why you bought them. Investment or because you wanted them to use? Are they already used and not NIB? If they are already used, there is no reason not to shoot them unless they are truly antique, purchased as an investment or simply to possess them and use might damage hard to replace parts. I have several firearms that are discontinued models, but I still shoot them. They are already used and continued use (not abuse) will not hurt their value.

        I shoot guns that haven't been produced in decades. The oldest one I shoot from time to time was made in 1901 and several were produced around WWI. If you don't beat them up, they will still look good enough to command a price commensurate with current market value.

        While newer guns may go up in value, I bet you will die of old age before there will be any real appreciation in what they will sell for. Shoot them and enjoy.

            Valuable collection guns ? No, but not all discontinued firearms are valuable rarity

              previously fired - fire away.. I wouldn't recommend wearing them out or carrying them in the woods necessarily, but still ok to shoot carefully in my book..

              unfired NIB - tough call.. this is something only preserved by not firing them.. for out of production or any collectible gun, can command a premium NIB..

              I have a few in each of these conditions and for me, it's not really a difficult decision..

              if I really have to shoot one of them, I'll buy another one in the condition I'm more comfortable shooting..

              for example;

              out of production NIB

              out of production previously fired;

              and the daily beater, loaner, kids lessons, etc.;
              I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it

                What kind of out of production are we talking? Some minor version of a modern pistol that the manufacturer dropped from it's line or something that hasn't been made in 100 years?

                Bottom line....
                Some kind of HIGHLY collectible classic...don't shoot

                Just a run of the mill weapon....SHOOT!
                Might try to pick up some spare parts if still available.

                  Shoot it.

                  I have a no longer produced (nor parts) and hard to find Walther SP22 - it had never been fired either. I shot it as soon as possible once I got it and will shoot it until I cannot.

                    I've a HK P7M8 that I've never shot in fear of devaluing it. I bought it used in great condition.

                    Should I not shoot it?

                      Those guns will last longer than you if you take care of them. Shoot them and enjoy them like they were made for.

                        I'd shoot it. The price will still go up unless you beat it up.

                            I'll pull them out once and a while, but they'll definitely not see nearly as much range time as some of the other ones in the collection.

                              You can't unshoot a gun, so you might as well shoot the ones that have already been shot.
