Any interest in a lubricant group buy?

Well, after reading about a million different lubrication articles on what's the best for firearms, I keep coming back to this one by Grant Cunningham:

I wanted to see if there was enough interest in putting together a group buy for a pail of the Lubriplate SFL-0.

Unfortunately, this is the SMALLEST size packaging available for this grease. It's a 35lb, 5-gallon bucket. I've found a distributor in Santa Ana that can get it, and it's close to 300$ for the bucket.

It's pretty affordable in pound quantities, if enough people want a pound or two here and there. I was even thinking about getting some supplies together to package it up for people.

But the real question is, is there enough interest to even begin?

    -------------------------------------------------------------
The other option is to buy 14.5oz cartridges of the slightly thicker SFL-1. They come in cases of 10 for I think around 8$/cartridge.

Folks, this is lubricant for your weapons. Not for personal areas, not for sexual purposes. I have a pretty low tolerance for a bunch of threadjacking that will damage the actual interested parties' ability to coordinate this group buy.

Not least of which is that I'll get a free ounce of it for every one of your posts I delete. Wait, no I don't.

Ok, don't make me cranky by forcing me to delete "different-lube-related" posts. I had enough of lube jokes when I had a one-gallon container of CLP on my wedding registry (no, I am not kidding).

If this is thread crapping I apologize in advance and feel free to delete.

Lubriplate 130 is available from Brownells for $14.99 ($7.38 if you have your 03FFL) http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/sto...SPEC.%20GREASE

If your looking for Plastilube, its available from Bimmerworld http://store.bimmerworld.com/shared/...unt2=291572213 or Scott Duff http://www.scott-duff.com/

These seem like more manageable quantities without having to repackage 35 pounds of grease.

Well, the grease is NLGI #0, which flows really well. It also makes it a bit better for firearms than the thicker 130-A.

However, I did find that you can buy Lubriplate FGL-0 in 6lb cans as well as standard 14.5oz grease cartridges. FGL-0 is almost identical to SFL-0 and available in smaller, more manageable sizes.

So instead of the SFL-0 35lb pail group buy, if there's any interest I could instead buy a full case (or two, or three) of FGL-0 grease cartridges and sell them off singly.

Depends on what the interest is.

Maybe you can pack it in film canisters, anybody remeber these? I think it is about right size and most likely you can get some free from photo shops.

I think that distribution will be tough on this.

I'd take a pound. Last night I already took his other advice and cracked open an ancient quart of ATF and lubed up the Kimber with that instead of the rem oil I had laying around, but I didn't have his favorite grease for the slide and such.

If you go with some substitute, I might try that, not sure. It seems the SFL-0 is the stuff you really absolutely need a group buy for.

Theoretically the company should open up a side market by selling one-ounce squeeze bottles for $5 or so at gunshops, probably labeled "Grant Cunningham's Wheel and Slide Magic." I bet it would sell well at the 1000% markup that represents. But I suppose the gun market is too puny for Lubriplate to care anything about. It isn't worth their time to pick up pocket change from the sidewalk, I guess.

I actually emailed Grant about the FGL-0. His response was that for our purposes (firearms lubrication), the FGL-0 is pretty much identical to the SFL-0. There are some small technical differences between them, but nothing that would make either one any better or worse for firearms.

The SFL grease, BTW, is synthetic while the FGL grease is petroleum (mineral oil) based.

They why the blue blazes didn't he give that alternative in his article rather than just listing the hardest thing of all to obtain???

I guess I'd give that a try too, but even 14.5 oz is a lot for those of us not shooting a dozen firearms every week. (Wait! That means I can tell the wife I'm now obliged to buy until I have a dozen guns, and take them to the range every week--yesssss, I'm liking this buy better all the time!) Ahem. Anyway, it sort of looks like this group buy thing may not go through, but if it does, how are you going to get the stuff sent out to everyone? Seems like a pain for you.

I noticed this a food-grade grease, we use mass quantities of food-grade grease on our ships in areas where there is risk of it getting into the water. What a ***** it is to clean off anything it gets on, like cloths, the deck, lines etc....

Has anyone here used this stuff?

A pound is not too much for some of us, hell a bucket is not too much for some of us.
