    How I accidentally bought a new 1911

I went over to my grandparents today to wish my grandpa a happy birthday, and shoot the breeze with them. I got my grandpa a gift card for Dick's sporting goods, and when he saw what it was he said "Well this will work out well. I've been needing to get a new safe for a while! Do you mind taking me there to look around?" He is an insulin dependent diabetic, and hasn't had his drivers license for about 10 years. He's lived through a stroke, 3 heart attacks, and a few different brain surgeries. It's honestly a miracle he is still alive and as stubborn as he ever was.

I took him to Dick's to look at safes, fishing gear, and gun stuff. When we were done at Dick's we went back to his house, and he showed me some of the new guns he has bought and traded for. After he had showed me everything, he asked me to help him re-arrange some of his guns so he could fit the new ones in one of his safes. We went out to the garage and opened up one of his safes, and began to pull some rifles out. He had a story for every one he grabbed and pulled out. It was pretty cool to see his eyes light up as he relived the stories he told me. I got to hear about the bison he shot with his 45-70, the bull elk he shot in Colorado with his 300 win. Mag, and the monster mule deer he took in Utah with his .257 wetherby.

As we were putting his rifles back in the safe an old box caught my eye. I asked him what was in it and he began to laugh. He knew I have been wanting a 1911 for a long time, and I think he knew I was going to try and buy one from him. He opened the box and pulled out a BRAND NEW Colt Delta Elite. He told me he won it at an NRA dinner in the late 80's and never shot it. I jokingly told him I'd make him an awesome offer and give him $700 for it. He simply said "you've got a deal, pay me when you can". It took a few seconds to sink in, but needless to say, I'm very excited.

Well that was dumb. Now you have to go and buy another one, that you can shoot and not care about scratching it up!

        Too frickin' cool!!!

I still haven't decided if I'm going to shoot it or not. One thing I know for damn sure is I'm never going to sell it!

Don't shoot it! Family keepsake to pass down to your grand kids one day.

Seriously though, take your grandpa out to a nice dinner.

Your grandpa rules! I think you would honor him by shooting it, perhaps bring him to the range with you when you do, I am sure he would get a kick out of it. I would shoot it. This is going to be a family heirloom, clean it well, shoot it and then pass it down to your grandkids one day, except by the time most of us have grandkids, this pistol will probably be illegal, at least in this state.

That is Spectacular ! Fond memories there. I have a Delta Elite, from the same era, in Stainless. Yep, it's a safe Queen, used to shoot it quite a bit.
That ammo, Pro Load, is from Burbank Pro Load. John closed the shop in the late nineties and moved to Idaho. the company is Pro Load Distributors now.
John is still there, to the best of my knowledge.
FYI, that ammo is FULL Load hot !
Congrats on your Deal and very best to your Grand-Dad !

that was a great story, & speaking of stories if your grandfather is able to type or do voice to text, you should get him on here telling his stories of shooting the bison, elk, mule deer.
we would ALL benefit from that.
or maybe you could even help him by telling one of his better stories here for him.

that's a beautiful pistol your grandfather is very generous.

to my way of thinking if you already know you're never going to sell it then go ahead and start shooting it now.
(they do give home loans, so you can buy 10 mm. ;-) )

if you do end up passing it down in your family the next person will be able to start shooting it for enjoyment also. if they decide they don't want it and it's not worth passing it down to their children, what's it matter if they get a few dollars less for it at that point.

That is so, so cool. Wow.

I wasn't in the best of moods today, but your story made my day. Thanks for sharing.
