I am not sure what expectations people have of FB. Your FB feed is a direct representation of your friends and the company pages you follow. Don't like what your friends post or like, simply unfollow them (you are still friends). Don't like all the commercial posts from pages you follow, simply unfollow them. Don't like what FB does with your information, simply don't provide it or don't post it.

And you are still left with the single most popular form of communication and community we have ever seen.

I use it to stay in touch with friends and family. I use it to promote my photography side business. I try and stay out of most political discussions but I am not afraid to post pictures of guns or me shooting them. If one of my friends doesn't like what I post they can simply unfollow me.
