Would you use a range with background checks?

I've always pondered about what kind of shooting facility I would run if I had gobs of money. Things like a High Power / Mid-Range / Long Range range with 100/200/300/500/600/800/900/1000 yard lines and electronic pits, multiple private bays for pistol / CQB up to 50 yards, a 200 yard general purpose bench rest range, etc.

I would make it a members only facility with 24/7 access and 24/7 staffing, specifically for entry (e.g. someone at gated entrance).

But the one aspect I always thought about was annual memberships with mandatory background checks on membership opening/renewal.

Would you use such a facility, or any range, if they enforced criminal background checks?

There was a thread posted recently about felons arrested at a range (see: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...hp?p=16773106#) in possession of firearms. I don't think there's any objection to these guys being arrested, but it seems like there was objection to how they were arrested (someone called the cops because they had evil looking guns and 100 round drum magazine).

A range with membership criminal background checks would appear to be a form of gun control, so the first reaction I expect of gun owners is to immediately object.

But I for one would actually prefer this type of thing enforced. My old range was a public range (with memberships for cheaper range fees), and every now and then, there would be a non-regular that would show up to the range that I gave me the impression that they were not upstanding citizens (stereotyping/profiling probably, but still we all do it).

I think it would be a service to it's patrons if a range actually did some non-obtrusive regulation of it's members. I'm not saying a range needs to look at firearms people are bringing in or look at capacities of magazines, etc., and call the police if they see a suspicious "Assault Weapon."

But if some person were a convicted felon trying to join or use the shooting facility, I think it would be really nice to be able to say, hey, you're not allowed to be at this range. Too bad, so sad.

No. I'm not a criminal so I would pass the background check, so it's not that.
The Anti's would use that range as a shinning example to force all others to comply or be shut down.

My job requires criminal background check. And random drug test, and ... /list goes on/. I voluntarily keep a tracking device with me when I do some specific type of work. I see nothing wrong when somebody wants to keep criminals away from certain places.

I would pass easily, but the precept is you are guilty before being presumed innocent. That would make me pass and continue out to BLM land where the critters don't need backgound checks either.

For a private range like OP... Definitely.

I always keep a loaded magazine (at least) or loaded gun on me, preferably, when at a public range. On that off chance, I'm not going to be the one that doesn't go home. Although I do generally feel most comfortable at more-less private ranges or organized events. Let someone try something stupid when there's 100 armed guys that know how to shoot.

Those types that we all profile, definitely sketch me out. I hate that some people are allowed on the range. Although I know it's because denying service would cause a loss of more business than its worth.

For a private range, yes. Public range, no.

I wouldn't even think about going to a 'nanny' range that wanted to do a background check on me...what every year? Also, I deeply question your business model. The reason most ranges are not that elaborate is because of the cost of constructing, maintaining, and manning them. We gun owners, most of us anyway, are cheap and prefer to spend money on guns and ammo, not range fees/memberships. Nice dream though.

Are you going to determine the legality of their weapons and magazines too? And what do you do about guests? Or family members?

Why do you feel that background checks are needed? Do you think that gang members who acquired their gun illegally will be likely to come in?

Also, unless the law requires it (it doesn't, in Idaho) you don't necessarily want to guarantee 24/7 staffing. Otherwise, your costs skyrocket Some ranges give keys to people who join as lifetime members.

Private clubs can exclude anyone for no particular reason so only allow members you know or someone you know can vouch for ... no need for checks and such.

The problem at ranges are morons.

You can't look at a person and tell if they are a felon. Morons, well thats a different story.

I would not use a range that required BG checks. It would open the door for antis to use for even more ludicrous infringements.

Never. even though I know personally I would pass any test, I think it's against the principle that America was founded on.

you go ahead and show "your papers" for products and services if that makes you feel better though.
