I've always pondered about what kind of shooting facility I would run if I had gobs of money. Things like a High Power / Mid-Range / Long Range range with 100/200/300/500/600/800/900/1000 yard lines and electronic pits, multiple private bays for pistol / CQB up to 50 yards, a 200 yard general purpose bench rest range, etc.
I would make it a members only facility with 24/7 access and 24/7 staffing, specifically for entry (e.g. someone at gated entrance).
But the one aspect I always thought about was annual memberships with mandatory background checks on membership opening/renewal.
Would you use such a facility, or any range, if they enforced criminal background checks?
There was a thread posted recently about felons arrested at a range (see: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...hp?p=16773106#) in possession of firearms. I don't think there's any objection to these guys being arrested, but it seems like there was objection to how they were arrested (someone called the cops because they had evil looking guns and 100 round drum magazine).
A range with membership criminal background checks would appear to be a form of gun control, so the first reaction I expect of gun owners is to immediately object.
But I for one would actually prefer this type of thing enforced. My old range was a public range (with memberships for cheaper range fees), and every now and then, there would be a non-regular that would show up to the range that I gave me the impression that they were not upstanding citizens (stereotyping/profiling probably, but still we all do it).
I think it would be a service to it's patrons if a range actually did some non-obtrusive regulation of it's members. I'm not saying a range needs to look at firearms people are bringing in or look at capacities of magazines, etc., and call the police if they see a suspicious "Assault Weapon."
But if some person were a convicted felon trying to join or use the shooting facility, I think it would be really nice to be able to say, hey, you're not allowed to be at this range. Too bad, so sad.
