    Home Owners Insurance Discrim

Hey guys, trying to insure a condo I just bought in LA and I noticed some insurance companies (I'm not shy, the company that I just talked to is Amica) ask whether I keep firearms in the home. I'm assuming this ups my premiums or else they wouldn't ask. I'm not personally that concerned with insuring the guns themselves against damage or theft, if this is simply a question re rider.

Anyone have any recent experience buying home owner's insurance and/or have any knowledge as to how this affects my rates? Any insurance company recommendations in Los Angeles (related or unrelated to our shared hobby)? If the effect is significant, what are the incentives to disclose firearm ownership at all?

Thanks in advance for any responses. There's this thread on the topic but it's four years old: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=695938

I've never had an insurance company ask. What I have come across is gun-friendly treatment from AAA and Safeco when I asked about riders.

I just insured my home in AZ. They asked and it was simply to state that I would need a ryder to cover the total cost of my firearms. They also askied about jewlrey, lots of electronics, and tools. A $5,000 rider for the guns and $2,000 for tools was another $15 a month IIRC.

Did you ask Amica? That's where I would begin.

Most HO insurance policies have very limited coverage for firearms. If you want more coverage, you pay for a 'Rider'.

It could be that your agent is simply looking to sell you the 'Rider' for additional coverage. If he is asking because it affects the amount you pay for liability, find another agent.

I have purchased several HO policies over the years for both my primary residence and my rental property. No ins. co. or agent has ever asked me directly about Firearms.

          Good luck.

I think my insurance will cover up to $2500 of guns without a separate specific deal

It's not discrimination, it's an up sell on your insurance policy. They all offer riders for guns, photography equip, jewelry, musical instruments and electronics.

I would try State Farm, Farmers or Allstate.

State Farm insures up to 2500 in firearms as part of the basic policy if I recall correctly.
It was just an old plywood boat, with a '75 Johnson, with electric choke. A young boy, two hands on the wheel, I can't replace the way it made me feel.

They only ever ask about firearms for contemplating insurable content values, or if the value is significant, to endorse the policy with appropriate limits, or if higher than their policy-form allows - to then place a separate Inland-Marine / Personal Articles Floater to include the value of the firearms. Any good agent or broker will ask this question, not only to be sure you are not under-insured, but also as a premium lift for more commission.

It's not about liability. Property/contents only.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

Or 1/2 a gun if you are a true player.

Every homeowners insurance company that does business in California has a sublimit of coverage for firearms, most are from $1,000 to $2,500. That means that if your policy has $150,000 in Personal Property coverage, you still have no more than $2,500 in coverage for your firearms. Some companies require you to schedule the firearms on a personal articles floater- list them with their values and pay an additional amount for the floater. Other companies will offer increased coverage limits for firearms; Mercury will allow increased limits for guns up to $50,000.

Collecting on it after a loss is another matter entirely. Pictures, models and serial numbers, receipts... without that stuff, the claim will probably be denied.

+1 for what's been said above. A Homeowners policy will only cover a small monetary amount under the contract. I forget the amount, but that $2500 seems to ring a bell. So, just think how much it would cost to replace all of your firearms and if the policy limit would be enough. So, yes, the agent/company was asking the question so that they could quote you the appropriate cover limits and premium. The agent isn't going to get much more in commission, it's called customer service. Just my 2 cents.
