You should be keeping a count in your head. Never take your eyes off the sights/scope. You'll have to re-acquire your shooting position and natural point of aim.

Me and an engineering buddy are designing a device that mounts on top of a firearm and detects and displays how many shots have been fired. We're pretty far along in the project but we still don't really know what to call it. We've been calling it a bullet counter, round counter, and shot counter, but none of these sound very cool. Do you guys have any suggestions for a name we can use for the device?

My Beretta A400 Xplor Shotgun has a round counter built into it.

It is kind of neat. I check the round count out from time to time. I am at 1,600 rounds in 2 years.
