    What does "off roster" mean?

    Hello all,

Im new to forum and am just starting to get into firearms. Im looking to buy a handgun within the next month. Since I don't have that much experience I will be going to my "local" gun shop to rent and shoot as many handguns so I can get a feel for what I like and don't like.

Years ago I shot a Sig 226 or 229. I can't remember which. I really liked it but man are they expensive. I was hoping to find a used one and hopefully one without all the new "safety" features. (Im assuming you can still buy those if its from a private seller). Freeking California.

Anyway, while checking out the classified section I saw a few posts that said "off roster". Can someone please tell me what the means?

    Thanks.....the newbie

It means it's no longer in Ca roster of safe handguns for purchase*new*...you can buy one one the second hand market but some are a lil over valued since they're not easy to get in Ca anymore...

Off roster doesn't mean illegal...its ok to own off roster pistols but you are not able to purchase them new any longer...

Except If you're exempt from the roster somehow....

The CA Dept of Justice has a roster of handguns that are approved for sale by FFLs. Any handgun that is not on that roster cannot be sold by an FFL unless it is used, or on consignment. Therefore the only to get an "off-roster" gun is to buy from a private party. Unfortunately, people selling "off-roster" guns usually demand a premium price.

Heres the link to the roster: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

      Just click find.

It means that Ca did not get to test (destroy) that particular gun, because the manufacturer either thought it was too expensive to send each model, caliber, and color combination to this stupid state (Wilson, Nighthawk, Les Baer), or there isn't enough CA compliant features (Glock Gen4) on it to pass.

                      Hey Shawn....welcome to Calguns...

Don't worry too much about the Roster. Just buy something that you like used from the classifieds.

Renting guns can be expensive mainly because some Ranges require you buy their ammo.

Expect to own more than one handgun. Expect to buy a handgun and sell it because you want something different.

                      Good luck

Check out several gun stores to see what is offered. If you like the Sig 226 you also might like the Beretta 92FS or a CZ 75 (I have one of each). Those are metal guns as opposed to plastic guns like Glock, SW M&P and many others. I have a plastic Beretta, PX4, I prefer the metal frame pistols. Check out both types and see what fits your hand the best. Plastic frames guns have a couple of advantages in that they are lighter weight and many allow you to change the grip size as well. Metal frame guns tend to absorb recoil better. It doesn't mean one is better than the other, just different.

Renting at an indoor range to test one out is OK, some ranges will credit you the rental cost towards the purchase.

It will mean something completely different in 20 years. By then it will be that you're not on the list to get a firearms-purchase license.

It means GTFO of CA if you value your rights and want to own guns that are "unsafe".
