    Recoil and age

I'm a few steps away from 55 and honestly, my '06 and 12 gauge seem to hurt a little more than they used to. Is it just me or do any of the other senior citizens here want to comment or make suggestions?

To the younger members here; it's going to happen to you too.

Are we older or just wiser. I am finding I prefer the lighter recoiling calibers. I am right behind you in age.

It could be due to a change in your body? Maybe less tissue in the shoulder area? Past injuries? Or, maybe, it's due to growing up and realizing that you don't have to pound your chest and feel a lot of recoil to be a man? Or, it could be that your memory is going and it's always felt the same but, you just remember it differently or don't remember it at all. Hold on, I gotta take another leak.......................I'm back, what were we talking about?

That includes a lot more than just felling a little recoil.

I've always been more recoil sensitive than most people, so I primarily stick to cooler loads and smaller calibers.

Load light and practice a good position.

I'm sure I'll feel it sooner rather than later, at 29 yrs old I already have carpel tunnel in my wrists. I'm not giving up though, picking up my first .44 mag this week and planning for a s&w 500, and a .50 BMG rifle when I get to a free state.

I should have mentioned. Trail boss has rekindled the flame of some of my heavier recoilers.

When I picked up my .30-30 Winchester after 30 years away from shooting and my 50 yo shoulder never remembered it kicking like that. After 10 rounds I put it down. I used to shoot 200+ rounds a day back in the day.

Of course I have had shoulder surgery a few years ago. Then I found LimbSaver recoil pads. It tamed my .30-30 and the M1 Garand I purchased a year ago.

Since my eyes are also not what they used to be, I have also mounted scopes on these two rifles. It is nice to be able to aim at targets past 25 yards and actually hit them.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

                  I am beyond 55---it doesn't get better---it gets worse! LimbSaver pads---strap-on recoil pads---reduced recoil 12ga shells---it all helps.
Oh, and to be smart enough not to sit down and shoot 50+ rds of full-shout 454 Casull in a couple of hours! That hurts...

After many decades of heavy caliber shooting, my long gun shoulder is about shot...er, worn out. I started wearing a shooting coat with a broad shoulder pad to spread the recoil force about 10 years ago and that helps but after about 20-30 rounds of .30 or .303 my shoulder starts to lock up and hurt. 5.56mm is fast becoming my friend. I'm 61 now and am wondering how much longer I'll be able to shoot the .30 stuff. 50 rounds of 12 ga out of a 1187 is about all I can handle in one day. I'm feeling it later that night and need Aleve and an ice pack on the shoulder.

The shotgun is easy, get a nice 28 gauge.

I'm 62 and have been through some times when the arthritis in my hands made it horrible to shoot but not that bad right now. You should cut down on the level of punishment or you may beat yourself up to where you can't shoot at all.

Schedule the surgery now. Full power 44 mag ammo will pulverize your wrists. Guess how I learned about that.

I'm 65 and started using a PAST recoil pad some years ago after shoulder surgery. Even with the pad when I go shoot my Win 1886 with factory loads I keep the Ibuprofen ready.

I wear bi-focals but can still get a pretty good sight picture using irons on my long guns. Handguns are a different matter
