Traveling from TX to CA...

I will be traveling from Texas to California. Now in Texas I have a CHL and I carry a Glock 22 gen 4. I know my CHL isn't recognized in CA, but I do know that I can carry up to the Arizona border and that I can't even bring my 15 rd mags with me, so I have 2x10 rd mags for the trip. The question I have is that my vehicle doesn't have a trunk, but I do have a lockable gun box, with a cable, would me securing my gun in the lock box and my empty mags in my glove box be legal?

If the gun is locked in the hard sided lockable box, unloaded, it can be in the passenger compartment. I would keep the ammo separate from the gun but that's just me. If you are going to keep the mags in the box with the gun, I would not have one in the gun just to be safe.

25610. (a) Section 25400 shall not be construed to prohibit any
citizen of the United States over the age of 18 years who resides or
is temporarily within this state, and who is not prohibited by state
or federal law from possessing, receiving, owning, or purchasing a
firearm, from transporting or carrying any pistol, revolver, or other
firearm capable of being concealed upon the person, provided that
the following applies to the firearm:
(1) The firearm is within a motor vehicle and it is locked in the
vehicle's trunk OR in a locked container in the vehicle.
(2) The firearm is carried by the person directly to or from any
motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while carrying the firearm,
the firearm is contained within a locked container.
(b) The provisions of this section do not prohibit or limit the
otherwise lawful carrying or transportation of any pistol, revolver,
or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person in
accordance with the provisions listed in Section 16580.

The empty gun and the loaded mags can be in the same locked container in the cabin of the car. A loaded mag can not be in the pistol. A round can not be in the chamber. The glove box can not be the "locked container " It's that simple.

Yes, you can. But I'd expect a delay if you get stopped and they tumble out with your registration.

Okay, now what you are going to want to do is this:

1. After you get on the freeway or interstate drive until the next exit

2. exit freeway or interstate

3. Make a left turn at the light/stop sign

4. Cross over the freeway or interstate

5. Make a left turn onto the freeway or interstate in the opposite direction from which you were traveling

6. Stay in Texas, stay free

You can keep magazines full of ammo in the same vault as your pistol as long as they are not inserted in the pistol. No need to keep the magazines in the console or glove box or whatever.

That way, if SHTF, you just tap rack and bang, Bro.

Erik_26 I'm dredging not just the drive, but the lack of freedom there. I grow up in Cali from 62 to 98. Now I'm loving my Texas freedom and I'm not trying to mess it that up by visiting grandkids and having a magazine in the wrong place, even though to me storing them out of my gun is dead wrong.

Pistol with no magazine inserted, next to loaded magazines, all in a locked, quick access, hard-sided container seems to me to be the best way to legally transport your handgun AND have it ready to go.

I know plenty of guys who keep printouts of the associated california laws on hand, too - in case they run into law enforcement officers who don't know those laws.

If you are bringing long guns, you might consider locking them up, too - hard to know when you will pass within those 1000' school zones.

Or you could just put them in a paper bag on the seat next to you...or anywhere else you want for that matter.
