    Loooking for gunsmith

I am in the Lakewood/Long Beach CA area and need to find a good gunsmith to work on a series 70 Gold cup 1911 and a HK USP 9mm. both seem to be having trouble ejecting the spent case and feeding new one. I have tried a few different ammo types in each and they seem to do it every few magazines. I have cleaned them and put new magazine springs and even bought new magazines and same thing. Would like a gunsmith in the area as I do not want to send them anywhere and rather talk to gunsmith face to face. thank you in advance

I hate to say this but many people have had bad experiences there. I'd do a little more research before using Mikes. For 1911 work I'd probably go with Tanaka or maybe that older gentleman in the SFV, what's his name again?

I would avoid Mike's gunsmithing. I had him fit a thumb safety on a Para P14-45, screwed up the thumb safety and the left grip panel. That was a long time ago but I can still remember his smirk. Don't waste your time and money over there.

Call HK and they'll give you a shipping label for the USP and fix it for free. The 1911 probably needs new springs.

Bolsa sucks too IMO. Stick with Hoag or Tanaka for 1911 work locally. Anyone have recent experience with Bain & Davis?

Also I don't know how the average working man makes it in to Bolsa or Mike's with their type hours.

Have you called HK about the USP? It needs a new recoil spring assembly. They'll likely send it to you free of charge. You may want to replace the hammer spring at the same time. The 1911 needs new springs also.

Jim Hoag, the last of the old masters. Goggle his name for more information relative to his work.

The one hour drive will be well worth your time.

One of the first times I remember really "seeing" a custom 1911 (and I had no idea it was a "custom" gun) was in the movie "THIEF" with James Caan. The guns (a full house 5" and a 6" long slide) were given screen credit and the name of Jim Hoag as being the maker. My little understanding is...

From what the OP described, his 1911 issue may be extractor related.

Will O'Hara is my 1911 gunsmith. A bit further out in Corona from where the OP is, but still local. 951-371-4971

There's a guy in Monterey Park that I've heard good things about. He doesn't advertise but he's a member here so should be easy to find him.
