Too many wacky reloaders out there to trust a random round.
Good advice right here...Its not worth the risk.

      ^^^ This ^^^

That was exactly my thinking while picking up the ammo, and also my thinking on posting to CalGuns. It's hard to see ammo on the ground that looks brand new and in great shape and not pick it up to shoot.

I keep thinking, if the squib load had only gone in a little bit further into the barrel the outcome would have been so much worse...

With my recent education, however, I will be looking at those shiny rounds on the ground differently - seeing the chance of a squib load that results in me blowing my barrel or my head off... No thanks...

Let my experience save you the lesson and possible cost/damage!

It's a good thing when shooters post their lessons learned to help other people, well done. It's also humorous and makes a person want to ***** slap all the crew of the USS HINDSIGHT that actually think you would purposely do something to blow up your own gun and ask you why. Thanks for sharing.
CALGUNS DICTIONARY "FLIER": when a shooter wants to turn a 1 inch group to a half inch group because he flinched.

Picking up dropped ammo at an outdoor range where tactical classes are taught is like me offering you ammo and telling you, "Don't know how old these are, I kept them in my gravel front yard where people most likely step over them repeatedly." and you accepting them.

This is especially dangerous if you shoot anywhere that action pistol matches take place (such as Richmond's action pistol range). A nice, shiney 9mm on the ground might just be a freshly minted 9mm Major round some USPSA Open Division shooter reloaded. 9mm Major is a standard 9mm Luger gun is a bad combination.

Man I could use some more .223 ammo... Please tell me where can I get it for 10 cents per round.

Accept I personally watched our group drop and leave shiny new rounds on the ground - so not quite the same... still I won't be doing that anymore...

I understand, but you don't know where THEY got it from and how they've been storing it.

He said per bullet, not cartridge. He's picking up the ammo, pulling the bullets, and dumping the powder so he can use the brass and projectile for reloading.
