    FUD from Bright Spot

So I went to pick up a lower a few days ago. Chris was at lunch, and the guy helping me (Brian? The guy with the hurt lag), told me to get copy of the second page of my 4473, and keep it with my rifle at all times when shooting. His reason being is that now that all these guns are being sold, that they are going to be cracking down? WTF? And that my receipt for DROS from Bright Spot was not enough, because it didn't list the serial numbers of the rifles. I am very surprised to here this FUB coming from Bright Spot.

Half of that seems like good advice. The part about "cracking down" may just be conjecture. Anyway, Chris is an awesome dealer and Bright Spot is a great place.

I would call that odd. Are you sure he wasn't saying to have a copy of the 4473 so you can prove when you bought it if an AWB comes through (which isn't happening, but...)?

It is actually true that the DROS proves absolutely nothing. It would be the 4473 that would prove you bought the firearm you bought especially if you had to prove pre-ban vs. post-ban. I just tell guys to use their receipt for that though.

I am not sure if this is completely FUD. It is FUD only in the sense a new AWB is probably a ways out. It is not FUD in that if a new AWB was imminient, he would be right.

He said to make sure I had a copy of pg#2 from the 4473, and always stick it in my gun case when I go shooting. He said that to take pg #2 specifically, because it had the serial numbers on it, because they are going to be "cracking down" because of the number of guns being sold now. He didn't say anything about a AW ban, just to take it every time I go shooting

It could be that you might want to prove that you bougt this firearm legally after the 2000 ban and the copy of the 4473 would possibly sway an officer of the law into realizing you lawfully purchased it from a gun shop. If they ask you if your AR15 is registered, you say no, and they don't find it in the data base, they very well might take it and claim you have an assault weapon. Having the second page of your 4473 might convince them to find out why a gun dealer sold you that firearm since 2000. It might not.

I wouldn't call it FUD. More like paranoia. Which there are plenty that are like that.

There is some twisted rationality in this.

It might hold off the occasional idiot cop screaming this is an AW if you wave a 4473/DROS paper in his face, who knows.

I was told the same thing at Markleys. Guy claimed that unknowing cops were confiscating long guns because they aren't in the data base and that the evidence clerk won't give it back w/o proof that you legaly aquired it. I dunno, it sounded like good advise at the time so I've been asking for a copy of the DROS paper work ever since... figured it couldn't hurt. Funny thing is I bought a Marlin at Big 5 and asked for a copy of the DROS and the clerk claimed that it was illigal for her to give me a copy and acted as if she was ready to kick me out of the store.

The guy with the hurt leg is named Bob and he is a good guy who knows what he's talking about. Althought not as vocally passionate about firearms as Chris is, he is a good guy and generally speaking knows what he is talking about. He tends to be a bit more on the 'better safe than sorry' side of things (like suggesting that if you repair high caps to save the destroyed pieces just to CYA).

Knowing him, I'd imagine that he meant either the new 4473 formis trying to crack down on illegal transfers, the new California system is trying to crack down on it, or if something new is passed they are going to crack down so keep it with your rifle because we all know if it's not there from the start it never will be. Case in point all my papers are in a nice locked box next to my safe. Great place to know where they are all at but not good for when I'm shooting.

Bob doesn't really spread FUD. He's a bit more "the government is abusing us" than Chris, so I'd take a guess to say that he was jumping the gun in assuming a new ban was coming and he wants to make sure everyone is not going to get hassled for something silly like when they purchased their lower.

This does not sounds like FUD IMO but more advise to avoid getting hassled by some uneducated cop on AW laws. It might not be a bad idea in a CYA way.

And just to be clear, BSP is a great shop. CGF has successfully defended them and they were excellent partners in their own defense.
