After I sold all of my non-US C&R rifles, I kind of wish I had kept a Mosin M38. That would be a perfect beater trunk gun. Small, compact, simple, and cheap. They only cost $50 (at the time I bought them), and ammo was dirt cheap.

was it the trunk monkey doing the firinghow is that racist?!?!
I like the idea of a trunk monkey.
On a recent trip to Houston with my father, we took an AK 47, an AK 74, an AR 15 and a 1911. on the drive back to El Paso, about 60 miles east of the city, we took a break from the driving and pulled off I-10 to rest. about 3 minutes into our break we heard gunfire, presumably at us. did I grab a gun and shoot back? nope. we jumped into our truck and left in a hurry. It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
Happiness is a warm gun.

Exactly. One handgun and one 12-gague, with plenty of ammo for both. Best personal defense combo there is. You can carry both at the same time if needed without having to leave your AR or AK behind in the car for someone else to find. I never travel with more firepower than I can directly control simultaneously, unless I'm going to the range. All I ask is the right to own the same weapons I paid for the Taliban to own.

Good words... Or exchange the 12g for trh ar if you please. Main issue I come across when traveling is how to secure the firearms while at stops, gas, dinner etc so they do not get stolen. Lots of basic crime looking for spare change can find the guns. Then in the wrongs hands.

I like the idea of an 870 with side folder, extended mag tube, side saddle shell holder and of course 00b and slugs, about 50 of each should give a cushion for a really bad wrong place, wrong time scenario.
While big city Californians have never heard or been taught about the interstate plague of " left lane bandits " it is recommended travelers do a web search on the term before venturing into other states where the term has validity.
Its a simple concept really " Keep right except to pass" . This applies even if you think your traveling faster than everyone else .
For an idea how LLB are viewed, scan a few lines of forum where one guy wanted a 50 bmg to deal with these arrogant at worst road hogs, at best ignorant drivers .
