Howa 1500 .308, 24" heavy barrel. It's bolt action and it's probably one of the best action out there.

^^^^ Then you must just love the vanguard as it is a hand selected Howa.

Waveslayer---Thanks for the info. I know the NXS is a great scope. Have 2 on my 50bmg rifles. They also work better for spotting at the range than my bushnell or Trashco spotting scopes.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

                And I didn't say a Vanguard.

Categorically, the most accurate .308s out of the box will be the Accuracy Internationals with a Tooley barrel job.

I would say a GA precision is, DTA, then AI, but back on the OP. R700, Tikka, and a few Savages are out of the box for the average Joe.

I have a '52 99F. The balance is exquisite. Of most all my rifles, this particular one is the bees knees. I put an era correct Tasco 2X7 Omnivision on it, you can carry it with a gloved hand. Very accurate, very deadly, very quick. 2 Ishys 2A1s, good as any commercial guns, and an SAR8 (again very accurate).
I'd like to get an FR8 next. PAX

In that range I'd go with a Remington 700 5R

Yep though I own a Tikka Light in .270 and it is a tack driver.
I bought it because they offer a lefty version.

If I were to buy a rifle in that size range and I plan to, I'd repeat with a Tikka for lefthand.
However, I plan on a Tikka 7mm-08 instead.

Much better ballistics, better terminal energy than .308 so more punch per pound.
Ammo is nearly as common and a wide enough bullet range for any application a 308 can be used for.

But .308 is a staple and you cannot go wrong with that either.

I have a Tikka T-3 Lite in 7mm-08 and another in 6.5X55 and really like both. Super accurate.
My daughter just bought one in 308win. She brought it over and I mounted the scope, installed the direct replacement Limbsaver recoil pad and a buttstock shellholder. Next she will get an extra mag and a Claw sling. Then off to kill a pig or deer.
                              They are great rifles.
Do not know if she could "not go wrong" with a R700 but certainly do know she did go right buying the Tikka.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
