    Bored with AR15..........Thinking AR10? Should I?

Getting kind of burnt out on building and shooting in the .223/5.56 platform. Thinking of making my next build in a different caliber. I'm thinking 308 would be a good change of pace and fun to shoot with some good glass. I want it to be quality build so I'm already doing some on-line window shopping at Rainier Arms. Looking at the Mega Maten specifically. It would appear it's going to be spendy so I may have to stretch this build out as my budget allows.

Is this a good idea as a break away from my usual builds? Any advice for either building or shopping?

    Thanks!

There are better platforms for .308. For the money I'd rather have a nice bolt gun, second choice an LRB, last choice a scar 17.

If you're bored with an AR15, I'm not sure what the point will be building an AR chambered for .308.

Want to do something different? Go for a different platform. Maybe build a precision rifle. The same thing with a little more "bang" isn't going to be different.

AR10s are fun, makes the AR15 in 223 feel like a pea shooter by comparison.

If you want long distance accuracy, nothing beats a bolt gun though. Having said that, I have shot fairly accurately out to 600 yards with both an AR10 and M1A.

Unless you are satisfied with shooting from a bench, build it as light as you can. I find the AR15 platform does not supersize very well to an AR10. I built a couple that ended up being better boat anchors. On the third venture I went 18" lightweight barrel, and paid attention to the weight of everything after that. I am quite satisfied with a gun that shoots well and tips the scales just over 8lbs.
If I had to grab a 308 and head for the hills, I would probably grab the Socom 16 in the end. AR10 just feels chunky to me from a carry perspective.

The cost and all the problems building an AR-10 put me off, plus the high cost of that ammo.

I built a commie AR-47 chambered in 7.62x39. Cheap ammo, .308 bullet and lots of fun.

Stop building, start shooting. Or build an AK, refurb a C&R, or start reloading.

Seriously though, the AR-15 platform is played out. The AR-10 platform is where it's at. When you're done with that you can move to the Remington 870 platform, or the Savage 110 platform. Maybe get into handgun platforms via the Glock platform or the M&P platform. You could always try the AK platform or buy a black powder kit platform so you can build your own platform. Perhaps a cannon platform? You could get a full auto airsoft platform that allows you and your friends to practice drill platforms.

I have to throw in the bolt gun option as well. I have a winchester 300 magnum bolt action with a scope, and it always puts a smile on my face to shoot it, especially in an indoor rifle range where the thing sounds like a cannon and the shockwave shakes the dust off the ceiling. Everybody always looks over from their bay like "wtf was that??"
