That's not a misspelling, maroon is an actual words. And in the context the OP used it in, would be the exact word he intended to use.

Melensdad, I think you make some good points here.

Ideally open carry is a path to "Shall Issue" concealed carry permits. Once those in power recognize that people are determined to exercise their rights then concealed carry permits are issued to preserve social norms. Not to be perjorative, but bear in mind that ~80% of the population are "sheep". They get very uncomfortable around weapons. Concealed carry gets the guns out of sight when there is no other way to do it.

This is why some have advised not to OC at least until Nordyke brings Heller incorporation to California. Perhaps it will be moot in a couple of months, but until the right to carry openly is solidified the authorities can simply rewrite the laws to ban open carry.

You mention another advantage of concealed carry, and that is being "under the radar" so to speak. I personally do not want to be the first to be shot / shanked / stomped so they can get my gun. And by OC'ing, you give the bad guys a big advantage. They know you have the gun, and can time their ambush to their advantage.

You make some good points regarding the deterrent value of many openly armed citizens - an armed society is a polite society.

Finally, I'd just like to relate one of my favorite experiences with someone open carrying. I was driving through the streets of Pahrump Nevada after one of my shooting classes. An older gentleman was on the sidewalk with what I presume was a loaded revolver on his hip and holding an American flag on a staff. I don't recall anything of particular note being in the news that weekend, I guess he just felt like being patriotic that day.

I'd like to thank this maroon (even though he is a moron) for writing you this letter. If he hadn't, I still would not know what a raticle is.

Of course, I also have to agree with him that UOC is not the best idea. Unfortunately, currently we do not have the right to loaded open carry at all times. So, UOC is the best that we have. Pullnshoot, keep up the good work and maybe someday the letter writer will be thanking you for helping to make all forms of carry more acceptable and common!
