Honestly, to my mind, calling a California gun store in advance to ask whether they do PPTs is like calling to ask whether they sell guns.

So there is a Home Depot 20 miles from you in one direction and another Home Depot 20 Miles in the opposite direction and you need to get a Bosch Router for your 80% build. Do you assume "its a home depot....doesnt matter which one I drive to they should have it" Do you want to drive potentially 80 miles because you didn't do your research? Right or wrong how many posts are on CG regarding FFL's that don't follow the law or screw over customers. Assuming that because it's an FFL they can get it done without calling or confirming (again right or wrong legally) is just a waste of time. I had a friend who was all set to PPT a AR pistol and the transfer was done at Oaktree only to get a call back after saying sorry we can't do it by a manager.

Point is everyone has learned somehow or another that if they drive somewhere to pick something up and it isn't in stock or the store has policies in place different from their other chains a simple phone call before making the drive could've saved a lot of time and I'm not talking about a phone call to the cashier or operator that picks up the phone but a call to the manager or someone who has the final say as to whether the transaction goes through or not.

So yeah I just outed Oaktree as a place that refused to do a PPT on an AR pistol.
someone outed CAP Tactical for charging 10.00 on top of the 35.00 fee for PPT. In both those situations a simple phone call would have sent them elsewhere. Again right or wrong, legal or illegal assuming that because one looks like the other that the outcome of a transaction should be the same is just ignorant.

Yeah, that's right, make a bunch of complaints against the only folks who can legally sell / transfer firearms. Haven't you learned anything? Those businesses who run ranges, sell ammo, sporting goods etc... will simply cease selling firearms, which since the end of SSE, has become far far less profitable. FFL's make very little of the actual firearm sale. They make their money on all of the ancillary purchases, holsters, ammunition, cleaning supplies, targets etc... Ask any gun shop owner, if you doubt me.

Use your heads for a change and think before posting suggestions in retaliation against FFL's, as there are generally fewer and fewer and more each day seem to be closing their doors. The law of unintended consequences would likely apply if we did as some of you have suggested, make trouble for a gun shop. Do your freaking home work and CALL FIRST. It would have saved you some butt hurt.

Crap shops that break the law and don't do ppt or try to overcharge for it will close... Big deal. A better shop will fill the void. Remove your head from your lower parts.

When we are talking about a service the gun store is required by law to perform, your analogy would work better if instead of looking for a Bosch router I was looking for a Philips head screwdriver.

In which case it shouldn't matter which Home Depot I drove to. Without calling ahead.

The FFl's that complain and whine to me while im doing a PPT, WILL NEVER see a dime of my money again, ever. I cant count on both of my hands how many times i was at a gun store doing a PPT, with cash burning a hole in my pocket and i saw something else in there case i liked...bang, bought it!

As a gunsmith & 07 FFL I would love to do PPTs. But my city requires a commercial space to do them or sell guns. For me the cost is to high.

Screw that. If they are required by law to do them, that's the end of it. They need to do them! Just like I am compelled to follow THEIR requirements to wait 10 days, pay a DROS fee, and then their transfer fee...

I'd drop a dime in a second if any FFL tries to pull that crap on me. Of course, I'd warn them first. You know, give them the option to 'reconsider'. Anything less would make me a COMPLETE dick (instead of only a partial, but righteous one).

No, a better analogy would be about getting service - such as, if I wanted to hire an illegal alien from out of the parking lot to help with some construction work, it shouldn't matter which Home Depot I drove to.

But it does. The Home Depot on Macarthur Blvd in Santa Ana has day laborers hanging out in front, but the one on Harbor in Costa Mesa doesn't.

It's a cost of doing business. Each and every one of us has some task or issue in our jobs we don't like doing but the nature of our employment requires it. If we don't like it, we can find another job. When the FFL applied, they KNEW they were going to have to do them. I'm with those who say we should call them out publicly and then boycott their shops. They will change their tune.

Sales of a product is a service. and every home depot typically stocks Bosch Routers so it doesn't matter if its a screw driver or paint or routers or water heaters but some of those Home Depots are "by special order only" even though another HD might have it as a stocking item.

As I mentioned over and over again in my post "right or wrong" and "legal or illegal" several posts here on CG talk about FFL's that DON'T follow the law so either a Sticky or a phone call would find out what group they fall into and could've saved a headache.


Do you think if I were here in Los Angeles and someone from San Diego were to PPT a handgun to me on the agree upon Rifle Gear location that I wouldn't call ahead and confirm that the transfer is ok? Its in the best interest of both parties to do so even if its "known" that Rifle Gear is a good place to do a PPT

I was the seller in the original transaction and contacted the DOJ about LAX refusing to do the PPT. I received a call back today from someone at the DOJ saying they were going to forward the complaint to a field agent.

This will be interesting to see because LAX does not sell guns except to LE so I don't know if DOJ would still require them to process a PPT from the general public.
