    Defending Property During a Riot?

With all of these riots going on, it has me thinking about what would I do if there was a riot in my neighborhood. Then it had me wondering what can I do during a riot?

I saw mentioned in one story a shopkeeper standing in front of his store in Baltimore with a shotgun. I know during the LA riots, some Korean shopkeepers protected their stores with rifles on the rooftops.

As far as I know, there are no exceptions to the open carry laws even during a riot. Is this a case where law enforcement will understand and not charge you? Or should you expect to be prosecuted afterwards?

For the sake of argument, lets say someone is brazen enough to try to break your windows and steal your things right in front of you as you are holding a shotgun. What do you do then? Would it matter if you are in front of your house or your business?

You can't protect your property with deadly force.

If you are between the mob and your property in your store, as they rush you who's to say you didn't fear for your life?

On your way to the pokey if you shoot a gang member that is,stealing from you. Remember dirt bags have more rights than you or your family in California. You will be changing your name to pin cushion! !

This is a good question. My solution is to not live or have a business in areas prone to racial violence, and then have insurance to cover your losses.

In California, I am very hestitant to resort to using a firearm, knowing that the police, prosecutors (local, state and federal) will line up to prosecute me for the slightest infraction for protecting myself and my family.

This was discussed in the L.A. riots thread in off topic and a penal. code was given that indicated you can.

Who cares? You guys really going to hesitate if a mob is threatening your family? **** the law. I'm dropping bodies.

During a riot I would not want to be open carrying in the sight of law enforcement. Doesn't sound like the greatest idea and I'd be less concerned with them "understanding and not charging me" over, say, them shooting me.

my coworker got "arrested" during the last LA riot

He and a friend were on the roof at his friends parents store in a small corner mall. 5 or 6 stores..

They had lawn chairs on the roof
                        They blocked the two driveways

A car drove around and guys were hanging out the windows yelling and shooting in the air

the car came back, ran over the barricades in the driveway...

Coworker fired on the left side of the car, his friend fired on the right side of the car...

                        3 dead - 1 quadriplegic

They were taken to the police department, statements given, handcuffed to a bench for 5 hours and released to walk home...

No charges were filed... no firearms were returned....

The survivor (quadriplegic) claimed they were protecting the neighborhood from criminals and thought the two guys on the roof (my coworker)were bad guys.

Everyone involved were Koreans.... Sad times

LA City council banned sales of Ammo to LA residents......

What you had is what you had... no last minute trip to buy ammo

Officer, I only shot the man about to light the Molotov Cocktail. Someone in the mob picked it up and started the fire down the block.
