    CA DOJ rant

I have to blow off steam and get this off my chest

I have purchased multiple firearms in California, most recently 8 months ago, and have never been delayed or denied. I purchased a 22LR pistol for my wife at Turner's and was notified that I was being delayed 2 days before I could pick it up.

The DOJ won't tell you why you are being delayed in the letter or over the phone. They direct you to do a live scan, costs $85 here, and can take 120 days to get the results. The best part is even after getting the live scan done, there is no guarantee that the information causing the delay will be there. Could just be a delay because of a name mix up etc.

The person I spoke to at the DOJ also said that they cannot guarantee I won't be delayed again for future purchases even after I am cleared during their 30 day "investigation". Besides obvious reasons for another delay like being arrested, unpaid tickets etc; if none of that occurs, I can be delayed again and they won't tell me why and the whole process starts over again.

I am so freakin angry and I am partly to blame. I never really paid attention to all the posts and complaints about unfair delays etc because it never happened to me and it couldn't happen because I have a squeaky clean record.

Then this happens.... I should have been more involved and kept up with upcoming gun legislation. How in the world can we fix this? I cannot imagine that we could get positive gun legislation passed in a toxic political environment like California.

    /end rant

You're going to the wrong place. Select your county from the pulldown menu and pick one near you. At least in L.A. county they are as cheap as $10.

Better watch it, DOJ delay could indicate that someone stole your identity provided you never had delay prior your recent purchase

I Had to wait 2 days extra for my Daniel defense because of DROS delay, sent me a letter with that livescan bullsh*t but decided to wait good thing. I found out they mixed up my identity with someone prohibited from buying a gun. I guess this happens a lot. Try not to go crazy , just think good thought and you will get your gun.

OP's $85 est. total is much closer to reality than your $10.

Read the entire link you posted. $10 is the "rolling fee" paid to the print roller. There is a LINK in your link that leads to the DOJ fee structure. Add to that the $70 fee required you pay direct to DOJ ups the anti.

Did you use your ssn on the dros? I wonder, because I have a common Hispanic name, and I don't want this crap happening to me so I always put my (optional) ssn on the form so there's no confusion.

There is no place to input your SSN on the DROS. The SSN option is on the 4473 (fed), and is never seen by the state. It just gets filed with the fed paperwork and gathers dust for 20 years. All you're doing is setting yourself up for ID theft by some unscrupulous employee by listing your SSN.

Since that's the case, are there no other identifiers that can help avoid the similar name situation? Or, is it simply the DOJ not paying attention to detail?

Your DL (typically) is used to establish ID. A CA DL has your SSN tied to it, so that really should be enough.

The system is inefficient at best, so anything could be the cause. Since DOJ won't tell anyone what caused a delay, it's really difficult to pinpoint the exact cause to try to fix it. Remember, Kamala doesn't want you to have a gun, so why fix anything that makes it more difficult. Kind of like the no fly list. "We're not gonna let you fly (buy a gun), and we're not going to tell you why either".

Last Dros, I was denied because the clerk at Torrance court did not send my paperwork showing I paid off a ticket, to the DMV and I was driving with a suspended license for months and I didn't even know. When I went to the court I explained to the clerk about what was going on and she said to let the DOJ know it was the courts error and gave me her direct line and told me to ask the DOJ agent to call her if they need proof that it was their error. When I called the DOJ they could've cared less, they said they don't make calls to courts and I will have to pay another dros fee and wait another 10 days. I was pissed!

I ended up paying 25 for the stupid fsc, 70 for the 2 Dros fees and 10 for the gun lock. Total of 105 and a total of 20 days just to dros and get my rifle.

just wait it out... most of the delays get worked out by the DOJ agent... especially if its something simple and you are sure you have a clean record... delayed just means a DOJ has to look into it because some flag showed up... could be a misspelling in the name... they recommend a live scan if you have had any conviction in your past, restraining order, or mental illness on your record... Livescan will clear it up for them and you or they can find the mistake in the application causing the flag and sort it out themselves.. it usually takes a few days....for the agent to look through it and find out whats going on..

I am at 11 days now and I am trying to remain calm haha.

A thought occurred to me yesterday while I was on the phone with the DOJ. What a crappy job; sit around all day and answer phones from pissed off people (mostly) and you can't help them with anything.

It's definitely an easy job. You just give canned explanations over and over: "I don't know, I can't tell you that, 30 days, Livescan..."

I did not put my SSN on the paperwork. There's no point.
