    shooting in the high desert

    Hello everyone!

My name is Alex and I live in the Inland Empire, been shooting sense I was a kid and am starting up again after many years. I am not real good at writing introductions so please ask me any questions you may have about me.

I know that I have a bunch of questions for the group.

now on to my question. I talked to the BLM in Barstow today and they told me that shooting was ok off of powerline road. I looked it up on the map and not really sure where the shooting area is or what is out there. Has anyone been out that way and can offer some advise.

    thanks

Welcome to the forum. You can purchase a shooting map for San Bernardino county that will show you where it is and isn't legal to shoot. It can also be found online at: http://cms.sbcounty.gov/Portals/1/Fi...reas_final.pdf

The green area surrounding Barstow is legal to target shoot it. It starts at Hodge Rd. off of the 15 and goes north, which you can see on the map. Have fun and be safe.

Also, some people around here can be grouchy, but we try to welcome new guys and help out however we can. There is a ton, TON of knowledge on this board about almost every shooting related topic. So stick around and ask some questions.
If you are wondering if you can get a LTC in Riverside County: THE ANSWER IS YES!

You should have bought a map while you were there.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

        Welcome!

        Welcome to Calguns!
I shoot out at Hodge Rd. on the weekends, if you see my Burgundy Ford F250 (CGN sticker on the bumper), stop by and say "Hi"
Unfortunately there is a lot of trash, I try to pack out more than I bring. Don't be afraid to set a good example and pack out what you bring.
        Enjoy!

Welcome aboard cowboy. No idea where to shoot. I know Hodge Road can be pretty . . . . hairy sometimes.

I've been shooting in the desert for longer than most folks here have been alive. I won't share my favorite spots because they're crowded enough, without announcing them on the interweb. But here's a few hints. Take a look at the map mentioned previously. Plan on making a day of it. Stay away from Victorville and Barstow. Bring your pickup or SUV, plan on driving a couple hours, and go out and explore some dirt roads. Exploration is as fun as shooting. You can discover your OWN shooting spot. Canyons are good because you'll be more isolated. It's not difficult.

Etiquette: Show other outdoorsman some respect and don't park near anyone else. Avoid crowded areas. Have a perfect backstop, hills are good. Never shoot at glass. Pick up your targets and your brass. Pick up targets left by any inconsiderate morons who have come before you. Tell someone the general area where you intend to go. Bring plenty of food and water. Be safe. Have fun.

I hate it when people shoot bottles, old TV's and other trash they bring and leave their litter. I and my friends always leave the area we shoot better than when we found it and often truck out other peoples trash.

Insert generic statement about not telling my secret spot and how people are ruining blm land by posting on the internet. Oh and can't forget generic statement about cleaning up trash...

Why is shooting in the desert so special? No clearly defined areas. Carting stuff in and out. Not knowing who else you might run across. Snakes.

The Lions Club range at Hgwy 18 and Rabbit Springs Rd in Lucerne has none of the 'problems' I mention. They have paper and steel targets on both the rifle and pistol range. 6-8 dollars and unlimited paper targets. And they do periodic lead recovery. Unlike shooters in the desert.

My only problem is the range is open only Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

I live in oak hills at the top of the pass and shoot off stoddard wells regularly. I've been approached by BLM before and haven't had problems as I go out pretty far and always shoot into a good backstop, as long as you are respectful and being safe they tend to be fair. Just be sure to pack out what you bring including all trash and targets to keep our areas in good shape! Happy shooting!

                          Here' one reason ^^^^

Where I go shooting I don't have to worry about other shooters, ever. The only people on MY range is me and who ever comes with me.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

I wont tell my spot because its private land..

If you go about 13 miles north of Kramer Junction on the 395, turn right at the Red Mountain Area, going in a few miles and you'll find some back stops.
Stay on the east side of the 395. I've found the shooters stay on the east and the RVers on the west.
