On blm, steel targets on shepherd hooks.
            Indoor, paper targets on hangers.
If outdoor, doesn't permit steel, then paper it is.

MNSL at Reeds Monday nights - all paper targets

USPSA steel and paper - not nearly as often as I'd like at Richmond Rod&Gun

milk bottles at Los Altos Rod&Gun not often enough

paper at Sunnyvale Rod&Gun not often enough

Paper and fruit due to range restrictions. I'd like to try steel someday.

Steel is a lot of fun, very satisfying to ping it at longer ranges. I like the liter bottles of colored cheap soda from the .99 store, shake em up and if you hit them right, they go flying, squirting soda everywhere. I like the rubber squares and balls, they are fun to put on hills. You hit them and they roll down the hill, you can try to hit them while moving, lots of fun. I'll usually pick up a case of cheap soda cans at the .99 Store also. They are fun to shoot and easy to pickup when you are done.

Paper is the most boring, I only shoot it to dial in a scope or indoor where that's your only choice.

So I guess to answer your poll, "all of the above."
Sounds like your shooting spot isn't long for this world. The powers that be will equate the trash with shooters and use it for justification to close the area.

We had an area like that here but after BLM hauled out 10 dump trucks full of crap (for the second time) they finally posted it. I once saw a half of a horse out there before it was closed.

As to the OP's question, I shoot whatever I feel like on any particular range trip. Sometimes it's putting tiny groups on targets, other times ringing steel and others hitting reactive targets of some type. Some times it's a combination of all three.

Paper targets, Steel plates, Gatorade/powerade plastic bottles, Fruit. Only thing that gets left behind is the fruit. Thats why I only shoot at plastic bottles, easy to clean up after shooting

Paper, and I'll sit out clays to use as rifle targets.

I prefer steel when available. The ping is quite satisfying, and there's nothing to check or retrieve so I can spend my ceasefires loading mags for the next round of shooting.

Being the math/science nut that I am, I have to have some sort of measurable, objective data to analyze though. Every gun I own, even the plinkers and "tactical" pistols get bench-rested every so often to check groups.
