my grandfather is a marine as well. he retired in the late 60s after starting his service pre-ww2. i thank god that he is still functioning at a pretty high level for his age (he is 92 now). i have his garand and 1911 from ww2, like your grandfather, he doesnt shoot much anymore.
he will shoot with me from time to time but sticks mostly to rifles with high quality optics. his eye sight isnt good but with corrective lenses and good optics, he can still sling lead downrange and ring steel.
the first "advanced" firearm i walked him through was the benelli m4 that i bought and then modified to closely resemble the m1014. he marveled at the engineering and was extremely nervous to shoot it as he has lost a ton of muscle that he thought he would need to operate a shotgun efficiently. after he put about 20 rounds through it, he seemed to enjoy it but didnt really want to shoot it again. i felt he was nervous and didnt like the fact that he didnt know EVERYTHING about a weapon he was operating haha.
the second "advanced" firearm was the SCAR 17. he will shoot that one with me every time i take him to shoot. the fact that it has very little recoil is a huge plus but again, he is a bit nervous around it without me there to walk him through using it.
