    Mandatory Gun Lock

Just curious, I did a PPT about a week ago and was told that I needed to buy a gun lock. I advised the dealer that I had a Winchester 24 gun safe and I knew the model number. He said it doesn't matter, the DOJ has his hands tied and there is nothing he can do and I would still need to buy a gun lock.

I accompanied a buddy for another PPT at a different FFL and he told the dealer that he had a safe, the dealer handed him a safe waiver document (I forget the name of the document) where he wrote in the make and model of the safe and did not have to pay for the gun lock.

Is it up to the FFL to offer those safe waiver forms or do they have to provide them?

I know it is only a 10 dollar charge but it still feels like I was hustled into paying 10 bucks.

I've done many PPT's and bought several new firearms in the past and have always used a safe waiver and it seemed odd to me that this FFL had no idea what I was talking about when I mention that I had a Winchester safe and a gave him the model number.

I'm pretty sure the safe waiver is only for long guns.

      This.

I've bought 3 handguns. The first one came with it's own lock but I was charged for another one anyway. Did not receive the extra. The second one I was given the safe affidavit by the ffl and wasn't sold or charged for a lock(gun didn't come with a lock either). The third one didn't come with a lock, like the second, but I was charged for one that I didn't receive. This is when I found out that the safe affidavit only works with long guns. The clerk told me as much but couldn't remember to actually give me the thing(I forgot as well, wanting to gtfo).

1 out of 3 I actually received a lock and only because it was packaged by the manufacturer. I can see how it's confusing. I definitely was.

Every shop Ive bought guns at has let me use the gunlock in the case except Turners which forced me to buy an additional one from them. That was the straw that broke the camels back, Never giving those dicks my money again.

              Yup.

Other wise a DOJ approved gun lock is required. I think reciept of purchase is required as well. Has to be with in 30 days.

Just bring an old one with a hand written note signed with a item count and total and date of "purchase". They can't say no. It's a legal reciept/proof of purchase and they can't force you to buy one in store.

My last 3 pistol purchases, 2 different shops, safe affidavits were filled out and no locks required. Always brought my own and locked it once in the car but all I can figure is that they either didn't care or because they see me so often

I did a PPT with a handgun this morning with fellow calgunner, jli567, at Iron Sights gunstore in Oceanside. Fortunately, I had an approved lock in my vehicle and Chris at Iron Sights let me give it to jli567, and that saved him from having to buy another lock.

Kudos to Chris and Iron Sights for not gouging a fellow calgunner. Also, I have to say that Chris did the fastest and most friendly and professional job of doing the PPT that I have experienced.

Some stores make you buy a lock even if you already have an approved one. Hate the inconsistency. As far as I know, if you buy a HG then you need an approved lock, not one that is new.

Seem like we are the the mercy of the FFL. Some FFL wants to charge you extra $10 for the gun lock because they are not making any money on the PPT.

There IS a "approved" list of acceptable locks. Some locks included with new pistols are not on the list. Look for yourself on the doj site. Some manufactures use different brand locks on different models. Some/most dealers will not accept a hand written receipt.
You don't need the lock to start the dros, just to pick up.
So buy a approved lock (probably any cable lock labeled as a gun lock) at Turners or WalMart, etc., within 30 days of pick up and then return it later.
If you start a dros and buy a lock at the same time and on the same receipt, Turners will not let you return the lock. Get a separate receipt.

                          GUN SAFE IS CORRECT

You do not need to buy a gun lock if you own a gun safe, that includes pistols, revolvers, or long guns. It's black and white from the DOJ. I just called my FFL dealer (long time in the business), and he too said you do not need to buy a gun lock if you own a gun safe. Don't get ripped off!

That's only correct for CALIFORNIA law.

FEDERAL law demands the separate lock for handguns, because BATF will not - although they should! - accept the CA safe affidavit. Again, see the wiki link posted above.
