Rifle Ammo Panic Buying

So, I'm aware that the .223/5.56 has more or less disappeared or is selling for a higher price again thanks to the potential penetrator ammo ban.


Just for kicks, I went to slickguns to see how the latest prices were on the 7.62x39 and was surprised that just a few places were selling it for under $.30 per round. The last time I had checked the prices on this caliber was when people thought it was going to be banned last year. But everything settled down pretty quickly and supply and prices were back to normal.


Has the latest panic buying also affected the 7.62x39, or have the prices been like what I saw on slickguns for a while?

The local stores I've been to Tulammo 7.62x39 was the same as a few months ago from $5.xx at Walmart to $6.99 at other places

Even if m855 I see prices slowly coming back down by summer. That is if they stop at M855.

Best case scenario is they don't ban it, and prices and supply are normal by summer.

But we all know, grown men with guns are the easiest scared so they may just keep panic buying.

I bought two Federal bulk packs of 55gr/XM-193, two bulk backs of Winchester 115gr 9mm fmj, and even two bulk packs of Remington 115gr JHP at the local Wal-Mart this weekend to site in the new sites I installed on my Glock 17 and Armalite. As of Sunday afternoon when my wife sent me out for milk the shelves at the local Wal-Mart were still well stocked. Even with a Firingline indoor range just down the street the guy at the ammo counter said there were pallets of 9mm in back...

Ammoseek.com seems to indicate there are plenty of normal prices around on 7.62x39. Quite a few under $5 a box.

They all just got hosed. ATF isn't banning anything yet, offer all the hoarders .35 a shot, otherwise let them sit on that ammo.

And, as stated, ATF just lifted their potential ban on M855. It'll take a while for things to come back down though, but just as they came down after Sandy Hook, they'll eventually come down after this hysteria. We'll see just how far down after the dust settles though.

While I voiced my opinion against such a ban, it never really logged a concern to run out or tap away online to buy any "green tip" ammo. Most all of the outdoor ranges I shoot at won't allow any ferrous-core/jacket rifle ammo in the first place and I've got plenty in tow already of non ferrous-core or jacket.

What I thought was really dumb was the hoards reasoning that ALL 5.56mm/.223 ammo was going to be in short supply, so they fabricated a panic-spree on all such caliber ammo. I really couldn't understand a buying spree or panic except maybe on the green-tip ammo in some of the free states where brush-fires are not a concern. Even then, there is plenty of other 5.56mm/.223 available from other sources.

A lot of hype over nothing, a lot of fools creating a buying panic over ALL 5.56/.223 when none was warranted.

There is a lot of 24 cents a round on gb (wolf). LAX ammo was selling tula 1000 round case for $297 yesterday, and today it has magically dropped to $258

Too bad the ammo industry isn't a stock we could invest in. If it were, Obama would be making himself rich (buy low, announce a ban).
