Today's crude zip guns

A .22 pistol and a spring fired .410. The .22 is russian, the .410 is brazil built.

Pretty popular design, easy to make. This pistol was actually shown on youtube, well, the design of it, by the guy who made it. This example appears tidier and better built than the original.



The .410 is fairly crude. Looks like it'd hurt to fire. Not shown is a nut that keeps the breech closed during firing.

I love zip gun threads. I find the ingenuity fascinating and the lengths a man will go to in defending himself. The most interesting one I encountered on the net was several years ago, wish I could find a photo. It was essentially a barrel and handle with a flexible rubber ball at the back end. The maker made it so air was checked somehow in the rear portion of the barrel behind a firing pin. Firing was accomplished by simply smashing ones hand against the flexible rubber ball. This would in turn send the pin down the barrel and strike the round.

Are those blank .22 rimfire cartridges? I guess .22 rimfire shotshells can also be crimped, but I don't understand why the ends would be painted.

What are you taking about?

I know that's the general view, and it's probably correct in most cases, but my father spent his career investigating auto theft and insurance fraud, and he was amazed how hard some crooks worked at their chosen trade. He cited examples of guys torching out the part of a car frame on which an identifying number was stamped, and welding in a replacement section; moving engines around on wheelbarrows (back in the day when VINs were stamped on engines); all kinds of things. Some of those crooks worked harder at their jobs than any upstanding citizen.

And a lot of them were dumb. His favorite dumb crook story was of a theft that was reported from a garage. He visited the scene of the crime and looked down and noticed a trail of oil on the ground running out of the garage and down the street. He followed the oil trail down the block to another garage, where he found the stolen car.

For a lot of crooks, I think part of the attraction is the feeling of getting away with something.
