Checked my Springfield Operator yesterday. Ive had it on a gun magnet for several years now. I pull it often to play with. It in fact HAS been magnetized on the slide.
It is very weak but did attract a small washer. I didn't take it apart to see if any internals are magnetized.
I will still be able to sleep at night. I don't forsee an X-Men style magnet warp happening to my weapon.

OMG, this just gave me an AWESOME idea.

Put some RE magnets in the slide of a gun that has an aluminium frame. Eddy currents created could damp the slide, It could potentially create a longer smoother recoil, similar to if you have a tight 1911 running grease on the rails instead of oil.

Maybe if I put magnets all along my slide it will let me curve my bullet like on Wanted!!!

I've been using magnets I scavenge from old hard drives for years. No problem with the arms or magazines.

Personally I am not a fan of magnetizing stuff that has moving ferrous parts. If a small amount of lube in a striker channel can cause enough drag to render a firearm inop, I would assume the drag from magnetism could too. Plus you would be useless for compass navigation when it's Red Dawn time.
Any small amount of magnetism a magnet might impart to a gun is insignificant and would never affect it's operation. In fact, purposely magnetizing the entire gun would likely have little if any effect.

As for MRI units, the magnetic field produced is so incredibly strong that there is no comparison to what might happen in that field compared to what a small magnet might do to the ferrous components of a gun. Remember, an MRI magnet is so powerful that it'll suck things like floor polishers and full oxygen bottles into it.

That's actually very interesting . . . who woulda thunk?

Leaving the gun horizontal will cause all of the powder to lie in the bottom of the cartridge case. Your bullets will all shoot high.

There is really only one side effect to worry about. Your gun will always tend to point north.
