    Magnets and Guns

Are those gun magnets that hold your gun to the wall bad for your gun in any way? I assume gun powder isn't magnetic, so hopefully it's not pulling all the powder to one side in my ammo.

I know they're relatively popular, so I would think I would have heard if there was any negative effects from using one, but I thought I'd ask here since this place is so full of knowledge. I guess I'm mostly worried about it changing a spring's tension or something, I don't really see how it could harm the gun another way.

This is the type of magnet I'm talking about for reference.

About as harmful to a gun as they can be to a sledge hammer.

The only thing I would be worried about is whether or not the magnet would be strong enough to trip the hammer sear unintentionally. Something like a match trigger and a strong rare earth magnet might not mix well

Left long enough it might tend to magnetize your gun.

Which in turn, could cause a FTE if using steel cased ammo.

The only way that a guns finish or function is degraded is with heat and or friction two things that a simple magnet can not do. Unless you decide to rub a magnet against it very fast with enough force.

How does the magnet mount to the wall?

                      ete Found the website
                      Mounts with a single screw

Officer Safety Alert: MRI Unit Causes Malfunction of Officer's Issue Firearm

In July 2001, an officer from the Manheim Township (Lancaster County, Pennsylvania) Police Department had an incident where his issue firearm malfunctioned. The Smith & Wesson, Model 4013, .40 S&W caliber, semi-automatic pistol was found to have a magnetized firing pin, which stuck to the side of the channel within the slide.
Personally I am not a fan of magnetizing stuff that has moving ferrous parts. If a small amount of lube in a striker channel can cause enough drag to render a firearm inop, I would assume the drag from magnetism could too. Plus you would be useless for compass navigation when it's Red Dawn time.

Just make sure the bad guy is due North of you when you shoot and all will be well.
