Minimum rounds at a range?

I usually shoot at least 100 rounds. Last time it was 400 rounds between 3 handguns. Will shoot again in a couple of days but I'll only bring my CCW to practice so I'll probably shoot around 100 rounds. It costs $18 for me and its about 12 miles from where I live.sigpicComment

I have some Hornady Critical Defense (orange plugs) that I want to try out in both guns. I've heard more than one person say I have to shoot at least 500 rds of a certain round to make sure it feeds fine through a gun before deciding it's okay to use for home defense etc. I'm thinking that is way too excessive/expensive.Comment

It depends. There are 2 types of range wife and I shoot at on weekends.
Los Altos is $19 per person and you get to shoot all day. For this range, we like to arrive early and shoot as much as we can, we also stay the whole day. Ammo consumption is pretty high because we stay the whole day. Typically 300 to 500 rounds of AR ammo, plus another 200 to 300 rounds of shotgun ammo (we like to shot their manual trap there too). If we shoot with colleagues, add another 200 or so rounds of pistol ammo too.
We also shoot trap at Coyote Valley and Metcalf Field Sports Park. These 2 ranges are pay-per-round type, no entrance fee. For these 2 ranges, we typically shoot half a day, each time around 200 to 300 rounds of shot shells between my wife and I.Comment

If I am paying an entry fee, I plan on putting at least a few hundred rounds down rangeComment

It depends. If I am verifying zero on a hunting rifle/load, not that many rounds. If training then 50-200 rounds depending on what I wish to work on."... when a man has shot an elephant his life is full"- John Alfred Jordan

I am a member of an indoor range about 3 miles away so I might shoot as few as 100 rounds when I go.Originally posted by Kestryll:

I have no "minimum" number of rounds that I shoot when at the range. Usually I take at least a couple of hundred rounds for each caliber I'm shooting (not counting .22) and if I use it all, oh well. I rarely use it all.Sorry, not sorry.

I belong to a local outdoor range that has a members only side. I probably shoot 200rnds a week, sometimes more if I'm working on something. But if I'm doing rifle load development, I might only bring 5-10 rnds. Usually I'll bring a pistol on those days as well. If I bring the boy and his 22, well then it gets expensive; last week we shot almost 500 rnds of 22.Comment

As far as the range fee goes, I pay 11 bucks an hour. It would cost much more than that to drive to BLM land. If I shoot hand guns, I bring 3 or 4 different calibers, at least 100 rounds each. Rifles, 500 rounds of 22lr, 200 rounds of 7.62x54r and 7.62x39. I never shoot all the ammo, but I have it if I need it. If I bring the 870, I bring a hundred rounds.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Comment

That being said if you have already shot a bunch of rounds through the pistol to break it in and haven't had any issues in a while and now after a couple hundred more rounds of your chosen defensive load you haven't seen ANY issues with that load, then you are most likely good to go.
Doing all this with fully loaded mags to ensure they work properly and not just loading a couple rounds at a time. I have seen mags that worked perfectly when not loaded to max capacity but would balk when fully loaded as the first round was presented slightly differently.Comment

I usually try to shoot a few thousand if possible. I take it to the next level though, I'm a perfectionist in every way possible. Practice makes perfect!Comment

I've paid for a day's range fees just to sight in a rifle the day before a hunt. I decided to plink a little after that so, I fired a total of 7 rounds that day. Other times, I'll fire 75 rounds of 50BMG along with +/- 500 more centerfire rifle rounds. I don't normally pay to shoot handguns at a range though. It's just too easy to do that at home.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor
