    Dehumidifiers

So Im looking to acquire a LOT of dehumidifiers. Currently I use the tiny silica gel packs that you find in shoe boxes but I never know when they need to be dried out so Im looking at upgrading. However I have a few things to keep in mind:

I need to be able to protect about fifty .50 cal ammo boxes.
I have one small gun safe that I need to keep protected.
I would prefer the ones that are orange to the ones that are blue to pink.
And lastly, Id like to pay less than $300

So far I have two candidates:

Im trying to think of pros and cons to each. So far this is what I have come up with.

    Eva-dry E333
    Pros:
Easy to dry with plug in
    Higher capacity of water storage

    Cons:
    2.5 times more expensive
If I have to dry multiple units out, I may run out of wall outlets
Uses the blue to pink type silica gel
    Made of plastic
    10 hours to dry out

    Hydrosorbent OSG-40
    Pros:
    Much cheaper/unit
    Aluminum Canister
When drying in oven I can probably get a lot of them in the oven at once, and it only takes 3 hours
Much smaller and easier to fit in my already packed .50 cal ammo boxes

    Cons:
    Less water capacity

Thats all I could think of on my own. Do any of you guys own either of these or have any other suggestions or thoughts on what I should use?

i run a GoldenRod inside my gun safe. most ammo is kept in a separate locked area inside my home where the temperature stays relatively constant and without frequent or extreme variance.

I used to use these when I ran a ozone machine on my reef tank
Silica gel beads for Ozone Air Dryers. Starts blue and turns pink when saturated. Bake in oven at at 300° F for 3 hours to recharge to blue. 1.5lbs DI Air Dryer Media (Desiccant). Silica gel beads for Ozone Air Dryers Starts blue and turns pink when saturated Bake in oven at 300° F for 3 hours to recharge to blue. Available in 1.5 lbs and 3.0 lbs. 3.0 lbs fills Cartridge refill for BRS Jumbo Ozone Air Dryer.

I wonder if you can use a small air pump, like used in an aquarium and pump air thought the beads. You can build your own can...

uncle sam stores all of his ammo in sealed gi cans without any trouble.. in predeployment range excersizes back in '06, we ran '53 headstamp bmg through our ma dueces like a swiss watch..

like bsg, I have golden rods in my gun safes and according to my hygrometers, keep humidity within 10% of the sweet spot

my ammo lives happily in gi cans in a cool dry place..

I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it

What hygrometers are you running? I'm in the market, but there seems to be a lot of poor quality ones out there and I'm looking for any recommendations.

I bought the golden rod brand wireless with magnetic backs on the display.. although my safes are far enough apart, it probably wouldn't matter, they do have a channel selector to keep them separated.. I'll admit, I didn't do a lot of shopping around, I went with brand reputation, simple operation, and features I wanted.. so far, so good.. they have been running for a few months.. not sure how to compare accuracy with out buying another type, but the data they display is handy, and close enough for the girls I go out with.. bought mine on amazon which seemed best for me at the time.. along with a better sized golden rod for my larger safe..

I called golden rod [battenfield] directly to get some answers about the different lines they sell.. they told me that the golden rod is made in USA and carries the lifetime warranty, the gun saver is foreign made.. just a heating element I know, but what's a couple extra bucks to get lifetime warranty and peace of mind.. they also shared some humidity control info like 24hrs to normalize after opening the door, the range it should be in for gun storage, etc.. nice folks to talk to btw..

to add to the topic of ammo storage… is an informative online site regarding "U.S. Military Metal Ammunition Boxes And Cans" (Thomas Chial/March 19, 2007). link provided below:

So I did a bit of cleaning and one of my units has develop micro rust, thank god I caught it early, probably going to get on the dehumidifier pouches for the safe. I use Rusty Rags to clean it up and it's in open air now. This post is a reminder, rust is not your friend.

Ask yourself: Why won't Eva-Dry disclose the amount (grams) of silica gel they put in their products?

I don't know but I had 20 pairs of shoeboxes and 2 gel pack per box. I just slap 40 of them in the safe, this thread was a reminder, I suggest everyone do the same...

I know its been suggested, but tip of the month, SAVE ALL SILICA GEL PACKAGES, and stuff them in all your safe/boxes. Remind your wife/girl to save them for you, they probably got enough to save you from rust!

you can buy big numbers of silica gel packets on amazon. I bought a 50 pack last year and have them all over the place. The problem is I have no idea when they are saturated and need to be dried out
