All of this seems to point to a miscalculation not in production but distribution. Originally the CDC was thinking by week 3 they would start to burn through production at about a 1:1 ratio. I think we are entering week 3 now aren't we?

If you look at CDC guidelines (which are clearly optimistic at this point) they would ramp up to deliver 10 million doses a week by week 3. Current conditions are probably about ~ 1 million? They note that once phase 2 allows mass distribution capacity doubles.

If we assume that maybe hospitals can ramp up to 2 million by January, it would take until next winter to hit phase 2. If we skip to phase 2 now and assume mass distribution can add an additional 2 million to the system at least by next fall they might get 200 million doses out

Otherwise, by summer it appears that the current system will be lucky to get to 50m doses.

Just saw this in the news this morning ^ Same thing is happening everywhere - a large percentage of frontline healthcare workers, first responders, etc. are not taking it.

Conversely in Florida where Governor Desantis let the hospitals take charge of distribution on a first come, first served bases they are seeing massive demand and people waiting in line for hours.

Of course being a Republican led state means the media is reporting this as a failure, while the central planners failures in NY and California are mostly ignored.

There's a difference between first responders who already have a good routine, good equipment, turning it down because they already know how to avoid getting sick, and then people who don't have those turning it down. It's also possible there are frontline workers who are turning it down so someone who needs it more can get it. <snip>

Bruce isn't wrong about the pretty much non-existent PR messaging regarding the vaccine, Den. Pence publicly got the shot, and Fauci too, which are good, but this is a major thing that needs all of our cooperation to pull off successfully.

Government has been working on a PR campaign, but it's been largely to question the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, not to encourage it's acceptance.

What are you going on about? Come on, stop looking for a fight and try to have a discussion once in a while.

Everyone should get the shot, period. I think the frontline workers declining are wrong to do so, but it's their life. However, Bangel's post suggested that because frontline workers are declining, everyone else should too.

There's a big difference between frontline workers and regular Americans. They have access to all sorts of equipment and training, so if they decline they still have a very good chance of not getting sick, especially if they aren't in a high risk specialization.
