Well, thank God the world ends in nine, or is it eight now?

I think it will be more like forever. It's never going away. About the best we can hope for is that it evolves to a less virulent variety, and that we adapt to it.

There is really no other possibility.

I would expect that. IF there was a concerted global effort to eradicate it, much the way that happened with smallpox and polio... maybe. Not likely, though, given both the nature of the virus as well as the massive amount of misinformation (and love of that misinformation) out there. Totalitarian / communal priority states like China might be able to get away with it by simply forcing/telling everyone to get it all at once and rigorously quick-testing at entry points. Still wouldn't be easy.

We can look at the 1918 virus, H1N1. it's still with us. it never went away. in fact, every single major flu outbreak since 1918 can be traced to it. the virus jumped from something to humans, back to animals, back to humans, and so on.

which is why statements like "it's going to go away" early on in this crisis were so egregiously irresponsible.

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

Yeah, it's not going away. Hope we find new treatments for it and longer lasting vaccines.

Our way of operating in the hospitals with these symptoms will forever be changed.

Makes you wonder about they way politicians have utilized our fears over the years. And I'm not saying that in a particular instant they were right or wrong, but the fear factor is something that has been used on the population all of my life. Anything from fear the bomb, fear global warming, fear the Ruskies, fear the Covid, to fear whitey.

                      That's not true, though.
IIRC the last community transmission case of polio was in like 1992. Smallpox... in the early 70s? Measles has been trying to make a comeback due to declining vaccination in schools, but even so it's very rare (and note that Measles is waaay more contagious than even COVID19 - something like an R0 of 16).

So it needn't be assumed to be impossible to eradicate.

Gotta make that cash off their vaccine some how. Say it will stick around for 10 years means 10 years of for sure sales...

The caveat is that Smallpox didn't have the ability to hide in non-humans, so when everybody was vaccinated it had no where to go and was eradicated.

Coronavirus can at least hide in bats, or Commie labs.

You DO know don't you that smallpox is kept alive in a lab in London just in case ? If not do some research, you'll find it.
