Lastly, I've increased handwashing and hand sanitizer usage. I've done all an individual can do. What have you personally done?

I fully agree that the BLM protests earlier in the summer increased spread, but that's definitely not the story for this surge. The current surge is heavily concentrated in rural states. Also, I don't recall a lot of riots in ND/SD/WY/ID/UT or anywhere in the country for that matter in the beginning of October. Nice narrative too bad the facts do not concur.

Do whatever your personal perception of risk indicates, but recognize most people are terrible at relative risk assessment.. If, you think the virus is a hoax, like the flu, the numbers are fake, etc. after 9 months of actual facts and data indicating otherwise, you're clearly unreachable. However, you should take the virus seriously. I recognize some people don't grasp abstraction well and will only take it seriously if themselves or someone close to them has an adverse consequence. Good luck everyone, we're going to need it over the next 4-6 weeks.
I wear a mask where its required to conduct business. Other than that no mask. Never said the virus was a hoax or not real either. The covid19 virus IS being made into something that its not.

But sure I'll play. What makes you think wearing a disposable face mask will stop the spread of a virus that can live on most contact surfaces for up to 7 days? Whereas hand hygiene has greater efficacy against the virus than a facemask.

Those disposable facemasks that everyone is required to wear aren't made to be worn for no more than a few minutes before the mask has to disposed of. Once the mask becomes soiled or builds up moisture it has to be disposed of because it is no longer effective. Prior to covid19 everyone any hospital or facility that was required to wear a facemask disposed of it once they left the area that had airborne precautions. That has been a practice since long before I was a nurse. Now covid19 comes along and its all of a sudden "okay according to the CDC" to wear a disposable facemask for the entire day. So that mask that became moist can act as a reservoir to the very vrius it is "protecting" its wearer from. But hey the CDC and WHO go back and forth so much as to what works and what doesn't work to prevent the spread of covid19 that they contradict themselves or each other on the subject.

I have had 3 people close to me come down with the virus and all 3 pulled through just fine. All 3 had underlying heath issues but recovered nonetheless. Want to know why? Their viral load of covid19 wasn't off the chart. The ones that end up passing away from covid19 virus has a viral load of up to several thousand times of a symptomatic covid19 individual.

This surge is happening because of the virus works well in the lungs causing viral pneumonia if left untreated. We as a nation are in pneumonia/flu season again. So it goes without saying that covid19 spikes will be seen as there more cases of pneumonia and flu as well. The virus is opportunistic in that someone coming down with pneumonia or the flu is at higher risk of getting covid19 as well if they haven't been exposed to covid19 and don't have antibodies.

CDC started that by giving the nation a green light to assign covid deaths to people that likely or certainly died from something else.

Wow, you voted for Biden too I guess....you think that people wearing nylon or bandanas or the same old dust mask is going to save anyone? Do some research before coming on here and sounding like an idiot.

Please provide the proof for that "story" and that kid...likely it's all BS just like this flu.

Is there a new flu going around? Yes.
The hypes about masks and stay home orders, horse chiet.

This two weeks bullsheit has been going around for over 7 months now. No change.

Masks are not air tight. So hundreds with paper masks in wally mart panting thru a flimsy mask is no different than wearing non.
President has a gathering on the WH Lawn, a bunch of people shaved and showered with their Sunday duds, that is a Super Spreader.
Thousands of filty looking beeLM with clothing that has not seen soap in months, barking and struggling like rabid dogs, no problem.

The flu was here way before the hoo haw started and hit the news. Millions got it and recovered like they recover from any cold or flu.
The noise started when pharmaceuticals and political operatives realized there is massive money and other stuff to be gained. So it was hyped up.

The more tested, the more positives which means nothing. Majority go home and recover.
Not fair to lock up millions of people, put them out of business, or forcefully mandate other bs on them because a minute ( far less than .001%) portion are in the high risk group. If it was worse, every one be dead by now. It has been 7 months, probably much longer than that and there is no massive die offs.
Yes, it is sad that some people die, but that does not justify me forcing you to wear a mask or change you life because I'm scared.

I actually have a supply of N95s, I stocked up back in late January after reading initial reports out of China.

As for the current surge in Hospitalization coming from flu? You should know as a nurse flu season "starts in late September/early October", but cases don't really start increasing until mid/late december. The current surge is not from flu.

You have your causality completely reversed, pneumonia is an opportunistic infection that affects people whose immune systems were weakened by Covid/Flu/many other infections. Read up on the etiology of flu/covid.

You know pneumonia is a symptom of an underlying cause such as a bacterial or viral infection right? And I was talking about flu/pneumonia season and covid19 cases going up. Not just flu but both. The change in temps to cooler weather and increased moisture in the air both play into a person becoming more susceptible to covid19, flu, and pneumonia. So the numbers should continue to rise probably more so than the first wave of covid19 did because of the sheer number of active cases already. The numbers will continue to go up and then level off sometime in the spring then drop down and spike back up again. Its cyclical and will be so until everyone has been exposed, a vaccine is developed, or both.

Of course, other places that have done lockdowns are also seeing increasing cases. Hmmm.

Everyone will, eventually, get this. The good thing is it is only fatal in some .3% of cases and, typically, those who die are elderly with at least 2.6 comorbidities. Doctors are continuing to develop and improve therapeutic techniques and the development of a vaccine might give us some added protection.

An added benefit, though, is that Trump has cured the flu.

Yeah...so? I think you missed the point of Sweden's plan here. The point of allowing higher cases in the spring and a higher death rate than their peers was supposed to payoff this winter. It didn't work.

Exactly what I stated regarding pneumonia, no disagreement, it's a secondary opportunistic infection that results from a primary condition Flu/Covid/etc. I agree, the current surge is largely a product of seasonality and will probably worsen as winter progresses. It's no coincidence the worst hit places upper midwest/upper mountain west are some of the coldest places right now.

Thanks for not descending into name calling and vitriol it seems we agree on quite a few things.

Not missing the point, at all. I don't think they expected anything like "herd immunity" in 6 months. However, they are not doing worse than places where there have been lockdowns. So I would argue that there really isn't a successful strategy unless you want to lock everyone in their homes, declare martial law and shoot anyone who goes outside.

Not true. See below (this was in the link I posted btw):

"In the autumn there will be a second wave. Sweden will have a high level of immunity and the number of cases will probably be quite low," Anders Tegnell told the Financial Times back in May.
