    CA COVID-19 Dotgram

Another way to visualize the COVID-19 data in California. Gray dots represent the number of state residents. Green dots are negative COVID tests. Blue dots are positive COVID tests. The orange dot (actually 3/4 of a dot) represents the number of deaths attributed to COVID. (Hat tip to Karen Siegemund) What many journalists are failing to include in their stories, and especially their headlines, is perspective--the number of cases relative to the population. That doesn't make it less serious for the individual patients, but it certainly should be reported in the interest of reducing dangerous panic and destructive fear, and for the purpose of evaluating policy options.

Data comes from the California Department of Public Health as of July 21st.

Oh yes, just like Sweden did.

The only problem is all the missed people that never really got sick and therefore didn't bother with a test. Some sources like the CDC have said the true numbers may be 10 times the actual positive results.

I said "problem" but that is only with the graphic. It's actually a good thing. We are that much closer to herd immunity. We may have already hit the peak, but there is still a good way to go.

Yet another person arguing that since the population prevalence is low we shouldn't worry about it. Therefore, we should fully reopen the economy. The argument relies on one very faulty assumption, it won't spread like wildfire. The entire south which only partially reopened kind of belies that notion.
