Another way to visualize the COVID-19 data in California. Gray dots represent the number of state residents. Green dots are negative COVID tests. Blue dots are positive COVID tests. The orange dot (actually 3/4 of a dot) represents the number of deaths attributed to COVID. (Hat tip to Karen Siegemund) What many journalists are failing to include in their stories, and especially their headlines, is perspective--the number of cases relative to the population. That doesn't make it less serious for the individual patients, but it certainly should be reported in the interest of reducing dangerous panic and destructive fear, and for the purpose of evaluating policy options.
Data comes from the California Department of Public Health as of July 21st.
