      Doesn't have to be sugar. The best thing to do is to make the placebo look somewhat like the study drug. Makes it less obvious that way.

      If the study participant opens the bottle and finds a container of Pez candy that will start to unblind the study

        Is it a prophylactic? Nope, absolutely not.

        Is it maybe therapeutic against some COVID-19 symptoms, with the caveat that it immensely increases the risk of cardiac death? Yep.

        That's about the extent of what's been proven about HCQ as a treatment for COVID-19 at this point.

          Not sure immense, because it is often given concomitantly with azithromycin, which is a very known QTc prolonging medication. There should certainly be a baseline EKG before starting anyone on hydroxychloroquine.
